In the serene setting of Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, a truly remarkable creature once roamed: Kipekee, a spotless giraffe, who was the only one of her kind on Earth when she was born in July 2023. Sadly, Kipekee has passed away, leaving the zoo community and animal lovers worldwide in deep sorrow.

The zoo shared the heartbreaking news of Kipekee’s passing in a recent announcement. They expressed their overwhelming sadness and extended their condolences to those who had come to adore the unique giraffe.

Kipekee’s name, meaning “unique” in Swahili, was chosen through a naming contest shortly after her birth. This name perfectly encapsulated her extraordinary nature, as she stood out in the animal kingdom without the typical spots that adorn her species.

In an effort to uncover the cause of her untimely death, Brights Zoo is collaborating with an array of experts, including the zoo’s own giraffe veterinarians, Dr. Bergman and Dr. Lacovara, alongside specialists from the University of Tennessee. Their goal is to understand the circumstances surrounding Kipekee’s passing and ensure the well-being of other animals in their care.

Kipekee’s name, which is Swahili for “unique,” was given to her after a naming contest soon after she was born. The zoo said it was working closely with the zoo’s giraffe vets and consultants, Dr. Bergman and Dr. Lacovara, as well as the University of Tennessee, to understand what happened.

“Kipekee touched the hearts of millions of people around the world — and she held a very special place in the hearts of those who had the privilege of caring for her every day,” the zoo said. “She was truly the sweetest soul and deeply loved her keepers.”
