The elderly man accused of killing his wife, grandmother Maria Dimasi, inside their Adelaide home has appeared in court for the first time.

Frank Dimasi, 91, appeared via video link from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he is being held under police guard.

A report has been ordered to determine if he is suitable to be released on bail.

Mr Dimasi, who has dementia, spoke to the court through an Italian interpreter.

He has been charged with the murder of Mrs Dimasi.

The 85-year-old’s body was found inside their Findon home on Saturday.

In an earlier hearing it was alleged Dimasi called triple zero and said he had killed his wife and was allegedly found with blood on his clothing.

The court has ordered a report to determine the severity of his dementia and if there is any risk to the community.

He will face court again next month.
