A Melbourne man has told of the terrifying moment his family was ambushed in their own home by thieves armed with machetes and a gun.

The offenders left their victims bloodied and bruised and stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of valuables during the attack in Melbourne’s north.

The masked intruders could be seen creeping towards the door wielding machetes at the home in Kalkallo in the city’s north.

They didn’t seem to care they were being filmed.

Gurinder Singh, his mother, wife and two young children, feared for their lives.

“They broke in with the pot as you can see they used whatever they could from outside,” he said.

“Why did I have to experience this in my life?

The three offenders, one armed with a gun, ransacked the property and attacked his elderly mother.

“They dragged my mum out of the stairway, thrown her on the ground they broke her head, so she had a lot of blood coming out of it,” Singh said.

She needed hospital treatment but is now recovering at home.

Singh was slashed multiple times with a machete.

But he said he ‘stayed calm”.

“I had to give him whatever he demanded and that’s about it,” he said.

The thugs took off with $30,000 worth of valuables including jewellery and $10,000 cash, which the parents had been saving up for their son’s 16th birthday.

They were driven away by a fourth person in a getaway car

The family is planning on selling up and moving.

“We [are] all working class families and don’t feel safe,” Singh said.
