Football star Sam Kerr has appeared in court after being charged with racially abusing a police officer in London.

Police saw the Matildas captain climbing out of the smashed window of a taxi outside Twickenham police station early in the morning of January 30, 2023, the court heard.

Police said the driver took Kerr and her fiance, fellow footballer Kristie Mewis, to the station during a dispute after one of the passengers threw up in the taxi.

Police bodycam footage showed Kerr and Mewis inside a police station, where they claimed they feared they were being taken hostage by the driver and they broke the window to get free.

At one point, Kerr is heard in the police station saying, “Honestly, you guys are f—– stupid and white”.

PC Stephen Lovell told the court he felt upset and humiliated by the remarks, while Kerr denied intending to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Kerr and Mewis are expected to speak in court during the four-day trial.
