Reports first came in last night of a sub-adult humpback whale caught in a net at Mermaid Beach.

They are attempting to zip tip the damaged net together to avoid any other whales from getting caught.

This is the first humpback to be spotted in the area this winter, marking the start of whale season.

More than 40,000 whales are expected to travel through the ‘Humpback Highway’ off the coast of Queensland.
