A man has been granted bail after he allegedly drunkenly ran over and killed two mates who tried to stop him from driving home by laying on the road in a town on the New South Wales South Coast.
Nathan Bernhard, 27, was having a pre-State of Origin drink with his friends Stephen Lippis and Bobby Kesell on Condie Crescent in North Nowra last night.

Bernhard allegedly went to drive his ute about one kilometre to his home despite being almost twice the legal limit – something police said his mates tried to stop by lying on the road in front of the vehicle.

It cost them their lives; Bernhard allegedly ran straight over them.

Neighbours ran into help by performing CPR but the two men died moments later.

Lippis’ wife, who witnessed the incident, has a young family.

9News understands Bernhard recently welcomed his second child.

A court heard Bernhard was allegedly almost twice the legal alcohol limit at the time of the incident.

The North Nowra man is facing charges of dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving (occasioning death), and driving with middle-range prescribed concentration of alcohol.

He is expected to face Nowra Local Court in August.
