A man has died in hospital after being stabbed in Sydney’s inner-west today.

Emergency services were called to Donnelly Street in Balmain, following reports of an assault at about 3.40pm.

Police said they found a man, believed to be aged in his 30s, suffering facial injuries and stab wounds to his torso.

Police have been told the man was injured during an altercation with two men before the pair fled in a vehicle.

The victim was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, underwent surgery but died in hospital.

A short time later, police were called about a car fire on Preston Avenue in Five Dock.

Police said a firearm was recovered in the vehicle and it was seized for forensic examination.

Crime scenes have been established at Balmain and Five Dock and will be forensically examined to see if there is any connection between the two.
