Man pleads guilty to treason over 2021 plot to ‘kill the Queen’ with a crossbow

Jaswant Singh Chail was charged with an offence under section two of the Treason Act 1842.

The charge covers “discharging or aiming firearms, or throwing or using any offensive matter or weapon, with intent to injure or alarm her majesty”.

Chail pleaded guilty to three charges, appearing via video link in London’s Old Bailey from Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, UK outlets reported.

The Hampshire man is the first to be convicted of treason since 1981.

He was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on Christmas Day, after using a nylon rope ladder to climb palace gates, while Her Majesty was in residence at Windsor Castle.

The court earlier heard he told the royal protection officer who told him to drop the crossbow he was armed with: “I am here to kill the Queen”. 

Chail, who was 19 at the time of the incident, was charged in August 2022 with the treason count, as well as making a threat to kill and carrying the loaded weapon in public.
