McDonald’s is launching a new retro-style restaurant called CosMc’s, which will focus on coffee and other specialty drinks, in a move set to challenge rival chains such as Starbucks.
The fast food giant will pilot CosMc’s at Bolingbrook in Illinois, this month, with 10 more stores set to roll out in Texas next year.
9news.com.au understands McDonald’s Australia so far has no plans to bring CosMc’s Down Under.
The proposed menu offers specialty lemonades, teas and blended drinks with flavours such as “Churro frappe”, “Tumeric Spiced Latte” and “Popping Pear Slush”.
There will also be a small number of savoury offerings, including staples from the McDonald’s menu such as the Egg McMuffin.
The concept is inspired by a space alien-type character that appeared in McDonald’s commercials in the late 1980s.
It’s the latest attempt from the fast food giant to crack the US coffee market, as part of efforts to “solve the 3pm slump”, where restaurants see fewer customers between the lunch and dinner rush.
“Our universe is growing this week as McDonald’s starts testing CosMc’s, a new small-format, beverage-led concept that’s truly out of this world,” McDonald’s said in a statement.
“CosMc’s seamlessly blends brand-new, otherworldly beverage creations with a small lineup of food, including a select few McDonald’s favourites – all designed to boost your mood into the stratosphere, if only for a few moments.”
If the pilot is successful McDonald’s will expand to the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio metro areas in early 2024.
