A Melbourne academic has been charged after child sex abuse images allegedly appeared on screen during a university lecture earlier this year.

The 70-year-old man from Middle Park has been charged with one count of possessing child abuse material as a Commonwealth Offence and two counts of possessing child abuse material as an offence against the Crimes Act.

The charges were sparked by an incident at a university in Melbourne’s CBD on February 5, when police allege the images were accidentally shown during a lecture.

The matter was reported to police, who executed a search warrant at a Middle Park home in February and seized multiple electronic items.

Detectives also travelled to Sydney, where they raided a second property on February 13 with the assistance of NSW Police.

Police continue to investigate further electronic devices that were found at the eastern suburbs’ home.

The 70-year-old man was then interviewed and charged.

He will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 7.

Police aren’t searching for anyone else in relation to this investigation.
