Legislation for a National Anti-Corruption Commission has passed the Senate, paving the way for it to be established.

The promise of a national commission to tackle corruption was a core promise by Labor at the election this year.

Labor Senator Murray Watt praised those who had pushed “for this important reform”.

“When you change the government, you change the country,” he said.

Independent Senator David Pocock praised a “historic moment for Australian politics”.

Greens leader Adam Bandt said the legislation had passed with two Greens amendments and came “after more than decade of pushing for an anti-corruption watchdog”.

“Now, the big work to clean up the corruption of the last government begins.”
