A security breach at Melbourne Airport this morning has sparked chaos, with flights delayed and hundreds of passengers having to be re-screened.

A person “inadvertently entered the terminal without a security screening, Qantas said in a statement, leading to the airline disembarking at least one loaded plane and ordering hundreds of people back into the queue.

Flights are expected to be delayed through the morning, with knock-on effects around the country.

Passenger Tim Joyce told Today his flight had been “a minute” from taking off before they were all asked to leave the plane.

“The pilot pretty much told us straight away that there was somebody who slipped through the terminal,” he said.

“I think we were basically the last people to get evacuated.”

Joyce said despite the inconvenience, the communication from Qantas had been “great”.

People are being screened on a boarding priority basis.

“I am glad they have evacuated the terminal to make sure everyone is safe, because it is definitely worth a few hours of waiting,” Joyce said.
