Former senator and seasoned journalist Derryn Hinch has been hospitalized due to an infection.
A message shared on Hinch’s Facebook page by his executive assistant included a photo of the broadcaster resting in a hospital bed.
“Hinch in hospital with infected legs after a fall. No posts for a while,” the update stated.
At 81 years old, Hinch was elected to represent Victoria in the federal Senate in 2016, following a distinguished career in the media industry.
He served until 2019 but was unsuccessful in his attempt to secure re-election.
Hinch has had a prolific media career, spanning print, radio, and television, and was inducted into the Australian Commercial Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.
The controversial figure has also received three criminal convictions, two of which were for breaching suppression orders, with the remaining for contempt of court.
The sentences were all related to court-suppressed revelations regarding alleged offenders, including details about the criminal history of Jill Meagher’s killer Adrian Bayley.
Hinch served 12 days in prison for contempt of court after revealing details of then-accused pederast and priest Michael Charles Glennon’s prior conviction in 1987.
In 2014, he served 50 days in prison after refusing to pay a court-ordered fine regarding his revelations about Bayley.
