Bridgerton took Netflix by storm when the first season aired on December 25th, 2020. The streaming network’s show transported viewers back to high London, when women wore extravagant dresses and finding a husband was a central focus. Fans particularly loved the empowering feminist themes of the show, which were demonstrated while still telling fantastic love stories. Two seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix, and viewers are chomping at the bit for the third season.

Netflix is keeping a lot of the details for the upcoming season under wraps, but fans do know the main love story of the third season. Bridgerton season 3 will focus on Colin Bridgerton and his relationship with Penelope Featherington, also known as Lady Whistledown. Here is everything we know about Bridgerton season 3.

8 What Is Netflix’s Bridgerton All About?

Netflix’s Bridgerton tells the story of the Bridgerton family as the children attempt to find love through the complicated nature of high society London. The Bridgerton family consists of eight children: Anothony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. The mother, Violet Ledger, is a widow as her husband Edmund Benedict died before the Netflix series began.

Bridgerton is based off an eight book novel series of the same name. The book series was written by Julia Quinn, and each book tells the story of how one of the Bridgerton children finds love. Some of the Bridgerton children are eager to find love, like Daphne who was the main character of season 1. Daphne is played by Phoebe Dynevor, who lied to land her role in the Netflix show. Others, like season 2’s Anthony, initially reject the idea of true love. Ultimately, the book series and the Netflix original series showcase all of the children finding their one true love.

7 Who Is The Main Bridgerton Of Season 3?

Bridgerton on Netflix currently has two seasons available for streaming. The first season told the story of Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings, whose name is Simon Basset. Daphne is played by Phoebe Dynevor and Basset is played by Regé-Jean Page. The second season shifted focus to the eldest Bridgerton child, Anthony, and his love interest Kate Sheffield. Stars Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley played the main characters of season 2 respectively.

Season 3 of Bridgerton is straying away from the novels a bit. The third novel tells the story of Benedict Bridgerton, but season 3 of the Netflix show will focus on a different Bridgerton boy. Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, which actress Nicola Couphlan revealed on May 15th, 2022. “Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that season three is Colin and Penelope’s love story,” said Coughlan at the FYSEE Netflix panel. “I have kept that secret since two weeks into season two.”

6 When Did Netflix Film Bridgerton Season 3?

Ahead of the premiere of season 2 on Netflix, the streaming service renewed Bridgerton for a third and fourth season. Time will tell if the series is granted all eight seasons. With the extra-early renewal, planning for season 3 was able to begin ahead of schedule. Creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who also created shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, was joined by executive producer Jess Brownell to create the upcoming season.

Filming began on the summer of 2022, specifically on July 20th. Netflix shared the update on their Twitter account, exciting fans that they may not have to wait over a year like they did for the second season. The stars gave an inside look to the production in a video, showcasing their filming location and their costumes for season 3.

5 Did Shonda Rhimes Delay Bridgerton Filming?

Though fans were excited to know that production for the upcoming season of Bridgerton was underway, upsetting news from set came in late December 2022. Filming halted at the request of creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes after she determined a plotline revolving around sex was too dark for audiences.

“We have been told that it needs the fun back so there are changes, which of course means delays,” a source revealed to The Daily Mail. “One thing is for sure though, the production team want to get it right for Bridgerton fans, so they enjoy it as much as they have in the past. There are some elements that Shonda is just not happy with so wants to change them. Some of it got very dark.” Filming has still not concluded on the show’s third season, meaning an early 2023 release date is out of the question.

4 What Cast Members Are Returning To Bridgerton?

One aspect of Bridgerton that fans adore is how well the actors and actresses were cast in their roles. The stars of the Netflix original show make viewers laugh as well as bring them to tears, and it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the beloved characters. It is no surprise that the cast is so dedicated to their roles, and the vast majority of stars will be returning to reprise their characters in the upcoming season.

As the season will be centered around them, Luke Newton and Nicola Couphlan are returning to portray Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. Claudia Jessie and Luke Thompson are also returning to play Eloise and Benedict Bridgerton. Fans are overjoyed with the news that both Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley will be featured in season 3. They will be playing newlyweds, a stage in a relationship that fans did not get to see with characters Daphne Bridgerton and Simone Basset since Regé-Jean Page did not return for the second season.

3 Will Phoebe Dynevor Be In Bridgerton Season 3?

Though fans are excited to see the rest of the Bridgerton family, they were devastated to learn that Phoebe Dynevor will not be a part of the third season of the Netflix original series. She played the lead of the first season, Daphne Bridgerton. After the first season, however, her role was significantly reduced since the show shifted focus to another Bridgerton child. The reduced role was a reason behind Regé-Jean Page’s decision to not return for the second season.

Though she is “sadly not in season 3,” Dynevor did not rule out the potential of returning to the hit series in later seasons. “Potentially in the future,” she told Screen Rant. “But season 3, I’m just excited to watch as a viewer.” There were rumors that Regé-Jean Page would make an appearance in season 3, as the actor does hold great fondness for the show, but the rumor has not been confirmed by Netflix.

2 Who Are The New Cast Members Of Bridgerton?

With the exit of Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne Bridgerton, fans feel there is a hole in the Bridgerton cast. Netflix is attempting to fill that hole with a new character. Hannah New is set to play Lady Tilley Arnold, a widow with impressive financial independence. The character is not from the books, and it is possible that Arnold was added to the Netflix original series to create some extra turmoil for the characters. New is best known for her work on Starz’s Black Sails.

Another new cast member in the upcoming season of Bridgerton is Hannah Dodd, though her character is not new to eager viewers. The character of Francesca Bridgerton was originally played by Ruby Stokes. However, she was unable to continue to play the role due to a scheduling conflict. Stokes chose to focus on her role in Netflix’s Lockwood & Co, forcing Bridgerton to recast her role. Dodd will take over the role of Francesca Bridgerton in season 3.

1 When Is Bridgerton Season 3 Airing?

Unfortunately for fans who are eager to see more of the Bridgerton family, there is currently no release date for the Netflix original series. The second season of Bridgerton hit the streaming service on March 25th, 2022, a little over a year after the first season premiered. If the plan was to have a similar air date to the second season, Bridgerton is certainly behind schedule. Filming is still underway for the third season, and post-production is a several-months project.

There is still hope that Bridgerton season 3 will air sometime in 2023. This year is still Netflix’s plan for the beloved drama, so hopefully fans will not have to wait much longer to witness Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington’s love story. With the changes and rewrites requested by Shonda Rhimes, this season is certain to be a success for Netflix.
