Hollywood is known for being notoriously harsh when it comes to unrealistic beauty standards, celebrities have always been easy targets for trolls and online bullies. Unfortunately, it seems that the price of being in the public eye is having to have to deal with unsolicited opinions regarding your appearance.


In a world of digital everything, it’s become easy for people to criticize the appearance of others while remaining anonymous, and although many of the conversations rightfully involve women, male celebrities have also been the target of body-shaming. 9 How Charlie Puth Called Out People Who Body-Shamed Him

It all started when the Left and Right singer, was photographed by paparazzi whilst shirtless after a trip to the gym, the photos garnered several mean comments shaming him for not having a six-pack. Charlie rightfully defended himself by hitting out at the body-shamers on Twitter, “Here’s just a quick reminder that it’s not cool to body-shame anyone. Not entirely sure what its purpose of it is. Sorry I don’t have an 8 pack, like damn.”

The singer-songwriter is known for speaking up on issues and promoting body positivity, in 2019 he criticized an app promoting airbrushing photos, saying “I was just watching a Youtube video and saw this ad come up. An ad directed towards teenage boys & girls insisting that they can contour their bodies to make them look skinnier. Some of the renderings don’t even look human, like what is wrong with the girl’s body? NOTHING.”

Thankfully, Charlie isn’t letting the negative comments kill his confidence, and has been known to occasionally post thirst traps for his fans.

8 Sam Smith Opened Up About Learning To Love Their Body

The non-binary Unholy singer spoke to The Sunday Times about learning to love their body after years of insecurities. Smith admitted that they initially dreaded the body-shaming and scrutiny that came with being a public figure in the music industry, but had overcome this fear. “Within my industry there is definitely that question of ‘What should a popstar look like?’ When I was 25, I looked to role models in the body world.

They continued, “Every time I went to the pool, I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off. It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous.”

Smith also expressed that they were “happier” in their own skin, “I’ve stopped caring what people think as much.”

Vin Diesel spoke out after an unflattering photo of his “dad bod” was taken by Paparazzi and circulated online. He used the opportunity to speak out against body-shamers on Instagram, writing “For all the angels that love dad bod…I will post an exclusive video on my Facebook when I’m done, body-shaming is always wrong!”

The War Dogs star who has decided to avoid public appearances, candidly opened up about his body image struggles in a 2021 Instagram post, writing “I don’t think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until my mid-30s – probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren’t exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body (from) press and interviewers. I finally love and accept myself”.

He continued “This isn’t a ‘good for me’ post, it’s for the kids that don’t take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun, you’re wonderful and awesome and perfect.”

5 Wentworth Miller Opened Up About Gaining Weight As A Result Of Depression

The Prison Break star spoke out against body shaming in a 2016 Facebook post, revealing that his weight gain was a sign of depression. “In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking for relief, comfort (and) distraction. I turned to food, it could have been anything but eating became the one thing I could look forward too.”

Speaking to British Vogue in 2019, the Bodyguard star talked about the pressure of being an action star in Hollywood. “I’ve done numerous jobs where you’re told to lose weight and get to the gym. I find myself with actor friends, after we’ve done a barely eating, working-out-twice-a-day, no carbing thing for these scenes. (We’re) looking at each other (thinking) we’re just feeding this same s— that we’re against.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy star who will voice Mario in the upcoming Super Mario movie was refreshingly honest about his struggle with emotional eating in a 2014 press conference, saying: “I’m sure I can’t relate to what females go through in Hollywood, but I do know what it feels like to eat emotionally and to be sad and happy with food.”

He continued, “And then to be almost immediately sad again and now ashamed, and then try to hide those feelings with more food. I know what it’s like, it’s a vicious cycle, and it’s a very real thing”.

Speaking to USA Today in 2016, the Orange is the new black star revealed that he used to be a personal trainer and competitive bodybuilder. When asked about what we can do to change the unhealthy narrative around male body issues, he said: “When we lock our boys away from these feelings, not only are they more likely to hurt themselves, but they’re also more likely to hurt others and be the ones policing masculinity among other men.”

Matt also published an essay to Medium in 2020 explaining why he is celebrating his weight gain. “I’ve gained quite a bit of weight, I’ve really let go, and as a result my health has been impacted. I have a healthier relationship with my body than ever before. I’ve really let go of the myths and bulls— around what my body is supposed to look like. I’m more joyful, I’m more free, and more fulfilled because of it.”

Speaking to Vulture in 2021, the Silicon Valley star expressed that he found it difficult to receive criticism after undergoing a physical transformation to play Kingo in Eternals. “To hear a bunch of people reaffirming my own darkest thoughts about myself was very difficult.”

He continued, “It’s very easy to get obsessed with that number on the scale. It’s a tough thing, It’s deceiving. You become obsessed with it, and I certainly have. For me, it’s not great to weigh myself every day.”
