Kim Kardashian has come a long way since the “staged” Keeping Up With the Kardashians. She’s now pursuing law, widely recognized for running a billion-dollar empire, and is finally divorced from Kanye West after a tumultuous process.
But amid all these feats, the reality star is now being attacked over her “unsafe” diet. As media outlets describe her new figure as her “bringing skinny back,” fans couldn’t help but think she’s setting unrealistic body standards, again.
Here’s the truth about her sudden weight loss.
Kim Kardashian’s Family Is Concerned About Her Changing Image
In an episode of their Hulu show, The Kardashians, Kim told Khloé Kardashian that their family is concerned about her being “really skinny,” adding that she might be “a bit stressed.” The latter smiled and took it as a compliment. Viewers thought it was “disturbing” and that the Kardashians are “obsessed” with being skinny.
“Kim Kardashian being obsessed with her sisters telling her she’s so skinny she looks anorexic on her Instagram story makes me want to throw my phone into outer space,” tweeted singer Bethany Cosentino.
In a recent episode of the reality show, Kim also revealed how she managed to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress for the 2022 Met Gala.
“I always thought [Marilyn Monroe] was extremely curvy,” the Skims founder told Vogue at that time. “I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger in places where she was smaller. So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all.”
She then revealed that she lost 16 pounds in only three weeks. “I knew I had to lose at least ten pounds for it to even go up on me,” Kim said in a confessional interview.
“This is exhausting, but it feels like a movie role. How an actor will lose weight for roles—this feels like my role is Marilyn Monroe. I am determined.” She added that she “would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein.”

“I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict,” she clarified. But according to Jonathan Valdez, RDN, the owner of Genki Nutrition and spokesperson for New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, what Kim did was “definitely not a safe way to lose weight.”
What Kim Kardashian’s Trainer Has Said About Her Weight Loss
In May 2022, Kim’s personal trainer, Don-A-Matrix told TMZ that his client lost 16 pounds in three weeks in a “healthy way,” noting that she worked hard for it.
“I think one of the misconceptions is — she works really hard. I was there through the process and it wasn’t like a starving yourself type of thing,” he explained. “She’s been on a real balanced diet and at times she wouldn’t eat as much, but then the second thing was she went to the gym and put the work in.”
He also revealed that over the years, Kim would “sometimes” work out “twice a day.” He concluded his statement by saying that “it’s possible to lose 20 pounds in a healthy way.”
What Kim Kardashian Has Said About Her Recent Weight Loss
A month after the Met Gala, Kim said that she was down to 21 pounds total. “It taught me a lot about my lifestyle and my health,” she told Today at that time.
“Since then, afterward, I continued to eat really healthy. I’m down 21 pounds now. I’m not trying to lose any more weight, but I have more energy than ever. I cut out so much sugar, a lot of junk food I was eating … I just completely changed my lifestyle.”
At the start of 2021, the Skkn creator spilled: “Plant-based and two workouts a day for 30 days to get our mind and body right this year.” Then in a confessional during season 2 of The Kardashians, fans got upset when Kim said: “I don’t trust anybody else to tell me when I look good. I am editing all of our photos to delete the bad ones.”
