White Lotus creator Mike White is returning to Survivor once again, taking part in the show’s 50th season. In Touch has the surprising reason that Hollywood’s hottest creative talent is heading back to become a castaway.

Why Is White Lotus’ Mike White Returning for ‘Survivor’ 50?

Host Jeff Probst told CBS Mornings while making the Survivor 50 cast announcement on May 28, 2025, that Mike wanted back in on the show’s action ever since he was the runner-up on Survivor: David vs. Goliath.

“Mike, after he finished playing, said, ‘I want to play again,’ and that was before White Lotus,” Jeff revealed. “Then White Lotus hit, and I thought, ‘Well, he’ll never play again.’ But he kept texting and saying, ‘Look, I’m serious, if you ever do anything where you have returning players, I want to play again.’ So, we’re happy to have Mike back.”

The show’s new era that began with 2021’s Survivor 41 has had all new casts since then. Survivor 50 marks the first time former players are being brought back together since 2020’s Survivor: Winners at War, which celebrated the 40th season of the CBS smash.

When Did Mike White Compete on ‘Survivor’?

Mike appeared as part of the “Goliath” team in the show’s 37th season, Survivor: David vs. Goliath. The series pitted underdog players against seasoned professionals with successful careers, premiering in September 2018.

The White Lotus writer and director listed his hometown as San Diego, California, and current residence as Los Angeles in his CBS profile at the time. Mike described his occupation as “filmmaker” and said of his personal claim to fame, “I’ve accomplished a lot in my career and was able to make a lot of movies.”

The three words Mike used to describe himself were, “curious/funny, dynamic, and imaginative.”

Mike made it to the final of his season after beating Kara Kay in the fire-making challenge. He went up against Angelina Keeley and winner Nick Wilson, who beat Mike seven to three in the votes at the final tribal council.

Mike White Wrote the Jack Black Film ‘School of Rock’

At the time Mike went on Survivor, he had an impressive list of movie credits, including writing the screenplays of 2003’s School of Rock, 2006’s Nacho Libre and 2017’s Beatriz at Dinner and Pitch Perfect 3. Mike also directed and acted in the 2016 film Mamma Dallas and 2017’s Brad’s Status.

On the TV side, the creative genius also wrote, starred in and directed episodes of Laura Dern‘s HBO comedy Enlightened, which ran for two seasons between 2011 and 2013.

Mike White Has Included His ‘Survivor’ Teammates in Episodes of ‘The White Lotus’

Mike never forgot the bonds he made on Survivor, as he has sprinkled his castmates throughout all three seasons of The White Lotus. The show premiered on HBO in July 2021, nearly three years after Mike appeared on David vs. Goliath.

He cast Alec Merino on The White Lotus season 1 as Hutch, a bartender and waiter at White Lotus Resort and Spa Maui.

Angelina and Kara played small but key roles in season 2 of The White Lotus, as they were featured as beachgoers in the opening scene alongside actress Meghann Fahy‘s Daphne. The women chatted before Daphne went for one last swim in the Mediterranean Sea. There she discovered a dead body floating in the water, which became the big mystery for the show’s season.

The White Lotus season 3 featured a scene including Mike’s season 37 pals Natalie Cole and Carl Boudreaux, who played a couple staying at the resort’s Thailand location. The duo was seen walking to dinner as massage therapist Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) gave them a friendly wave.

Now that Mike is back for Survivor 50 and has yet to start production on season 4 of The White Lotus, fans will be on the lookout for any of his castmates who might get coveted cameos on the HBO smash.
