General Hospital has announced a significant casting change as Cosette Abinante steps down from her four-year tenure portraying Emily “Scout” Cain. Since 2022, Scout has been an integral part of the soap’s dynamic narrative, being the daughter of the prominent characters Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) and the late Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). Her character is a linchpin in the ongoing saga involving two of Port Charles’ most influential families.
Scout’s role has grown increasingly pivotal following the turbulent custody battle sparked by Sam’s death, thrusting her into the heart of familial discord. Drew, embroiled in these tensions, had previously taken legal action against Sam’s relatives, including Scout’s half-brother Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), her grandmother Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), and her aunts Kristina (Kate Mansi) and Molly (Kristen Vaganos), by imposing restraining orders.
The plot took a dramatic turn when Drew’s wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), covertly administered drugs to him, resulting in a condition known as locked-in syndrome, which others mistakenly attribute to a stroke. In this new reality, Willow agreed to let Scout stay with Alexis. However, this arrangement was disrupted when Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), who supplies the medication that keeps Drew incapacitated, insisted on Scout’s return to Willow and Drew. Willow conveyed her desire to have Scout back home to Alexis, proposing to lift the remaining restraining order against Danny as a gesture of goodwill. As part of the unfolding teen scene in General Hospital, Scout seems set to join Danny, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke), and Rocco (Finn Carr) in the storyline’s new developments.
However, after Drew’s wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) secretly drugged him, causing locked-in syndrome, which everyone else believes to be the result of a stroke, she agreed to allow Scout to live with Alexis. This all changed, though, when Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), who’s providing Willow with the medication that’s keeping Drew paralyzed, demanded that Scout move back in with Willow and Drew. Willow told Alexis that she wanted Scout back, but that she’d drop the last remaining restraining order against Danny. Danny, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke), and Rocco (Finn Carr) have been major players in the General Hospital teen scene, and now it seems that Scout will be joining their group as well.
General Hospital Recasts Scout Cain
According to Soap Opera Digest, Kayden Brenna Tokarski will take over the role of Scout from Abinante, beginning in July. On June 1, when General Hospital shared a video of the cast celebrating the taping of the show’s 16,000 episode, fans noticed Tokarski in the clip and many guessed that she’d be playing Scout.
General Hospital is Tokarski’s first daytime acting role, but the 16-year-old has been acting professionally since the age of 10, appearing in various TV shows and films. One of her most notable roles was playing a younger version of Julia Roberts’ character, Martha, in Starz’s limited series, Gaslit.
Why Is General Hospital Recasting Scout?
Soap Opera Digest reported that General Hospital is recasting Scout in order to age the character. Scout will be the latest character to experience SORAS (soap opera rapid aging syndrome), a soap opera trend in which child characters skip entire years of their lives, transforming them from kids to teens or young adults overnight. The character of Scout was born onscreen on February 28, 2017, so she should therefore only be nine years old.
It’ll be interesting to see if General Hospital decides to age any of the other younger characters, as there is a large group of children on the show, including Wiley, Amelia, Leo, Avery, Donna, Georgie, James, and Bailey Lu.
Since Scout is such a major player in the Cain/Quartermaine and Davis families, it’s no wonder that General Hospital is aging her so that she can participate in juicier storylines. At 16, Tokarski is significantly older than 13-year-old Abinante. It’ll be interesting to see how an older Scout reacts to the issues of her custody and when the truth inevitably comes out about Willow’s role in her father’s locked-in syndrome, and also that she shot him last year and got away with it. Abinante will be greatly missed in the role of Scout, but Tokarski will usher in a new era for the character.
