It ran for nine seasons, airing over 200 episodes. In truth, The Office could’ve gone on much longer, and fans argue that would’ve been the case had Steve Carell’s contract been extended at the time.
Nonetheless, the show thrived and became an even bigger hit once it made its way to Netflix. Despite the show coming to an end, a lot of the cast remains extremely close. Angela Kinsey and Mindy Kaling recently reunited for a TV project, while the others are also still in contact.
In the following, we’re going to take a closer look at Ellie Kemper’s time on The Office. Her experience was a positive one, filled with lots of laughter behind the scenes. However, the actress did admit that one thing caught her by surprise behind the scenes, and it had to do with what went on in-between takes.
We’ll also reveal how Ed Helms felt about working alongside Kemper, and what the dynamic was between the two off-camera.
Ellie Kemper Had A Lot Of Laughs Behind The Scenes On The Office
As expected, Ellie Kemper had a blast filming The Office. She had many memorable moments, especially filming the season 9 episode that featured, ‘The Death Bus‘. Alongside Insider, Kemper recalls the filming of the episode, and how hilarious things were.
“We actually called it ‘Death Bus’ because a lot of things went wrong on that bus and our lives were in danger.”
“There was one really funny moment where you had to be there,” she told us, referring to the aforementioned scene. “I’m saying this, but it will not make sense to anyone. It didn’t make sense to me at the time. But I was laughing so hard during this song called ‘Shabooya’ that I just wet my pants.”
Kemper continued: “I stood up and I said, ‘I have to change my skirt because I wet my pants,’ and all the guys were so grossed out. Not one lady batted an eye. They were like, ‘Of course you wet your pants. What can we do?'”
Kemper had other laughs on the sitcom, though she wasn’t aware of a certain aspect to the filming prior to joining the show.
Ellie Kemper Revealed Filming The Office Was A Different Experience Compared To Her Other Work, Especially Given All The ‘Waiting Around’ On Set
In her book, My Squirrel Days, The Office star made a few reveals and among them, was how she didn’t anticipate the filming setup for The Office. Kemper admitted there was a lot more downtime than expected, especially in-between takes. This meant that her small talk skills needed to be on point.
“Because I had never worked on anything longer than a commercial or a comedy sketch before joining the cast of The Office, I was unaware of just how much time on a film set is spent waiting,” she wrote.

“You are sitting and waiting, or standing and waiting, or eating and waiting. One constant is that you are waiting.”
Thankfully, Kemper didn’t have a problem chatting it up on-set.
“One thing I often compliment myself on is my ability to keep a conversation going.”
“But, as is the case with most elements on which I compliment myself… this has one drawback… sometimes the conversation doesn’t end. This is a problem because I will often wander into strange, undesirable conversational territory and find myself getting entangled in the vines of the trees that grow there.”
Kemper would go on to reveal that she had memorable convos with Steve Carell, but never knew when it was time to end the conversation. Fans loved their chemistry together on the show, and it is great to see that the same held true off-camera.
Ed Helms Wasn’t Too Happy With The Way His Story With Ellie Kemper On The Office Wrapped Up
Andy and Erin were a popular couple on The Office. Ellie Kemper spent lots of scenes with Ed Helms, though the two didn’t end up together after Helms’ character kind of goes off the rails.
Helms enjoyed his time alongside Kemper, and wishes things didn’t get as complicated.
“It felt right and fun, and then there was a lot of complication that emerged in ways that Andy and Erin sabotaged their own relationship.”
“There was something so breezy and simple and natural about goofing off with Erin.”
Lots of fans would’ve liked to have seen the couple lasting a little bit longer, or with a better resolution, but it was not meant to be. At the very least, the two stars have a good time behind the scenes, and got along easily. That appears to be a constant theme for those that worked on the series. Rarely did anyone have anything bad to say about their time on the comedy series.
