Jason Gaskell is one of the most memorable characters on Below Deck Mediterranean. On his last charter, things did not go as smoothly as he (and his fans) would have liked, and it was clear that he struggled to bond with the crew.
But there is no denying that he is a skilled deckhand, and fans were rooting for him to continue in the position. It seems the series may be over for Gaskell now, but would he have made a nice payday from it? Fans may be surprised to know that Gaskell’s earnings, while definitely not small, might not be as high as you’d expect…
How Much Did Jason Gaskell Make From Below Deck Mediterranean?
Below Deck Mediterranean is a reality TV show that airs on the Bravo network. If you have watched the show, you know just why it has the following it does, and if you haven’t, well, it may be worth giving it a try.
There is no denying that deckhand Jason Gaskell is one of the most memorable members of the cast. He initially had a career in commodities which he left to pursue a career in sailing. According to Bravo, he has worked several jobs over the years, including apprentice, dockhand, and even captain. However, in the series, his role is described as a deckhand.
The show is highly rated and has enjoyed immense success (it is now going into its eighth season). But Jason Gaskell’s salary may be slightly lower than many would expect… Although we cannot comment on the exact sum he has made, according to Refinery29, when taking into account the size of the superyacht and the average salaries that those working on them would make, deckhands usually earn around $3,500 to $4,500 a month.
Of course, Gaskell is not your average deckhand and would likely make much more because he appears on a television show. The crew also earns a lot of extra money through tips. Slice said each member could make around $5,000 in tips on a six-week charter, which is a nice added bonus! And the publication notes that a deckhand can make up to $50,000 a season. While this is nowhere near what a captain would make (around $210,000 a season), it is not exactly the smallest payout either.
The crew will also get an appearance fee, and the fame of being on one of these shows could allow them to launch their own successful businesses or land spin-off shows. Gaskell has certainly proven that his personality is big enough to get him noticed, so it is not like future projects with the network would be completely out of the question.
Despite the estimation, it is difficult to know the amount that Jason Gaskell or the rest of the crew earns, and no one seems to be eager to share that news either. Heart reports that producer Mark Cronin has said this on the topic: “In general [their] salaries are in line with what they would make anyway as a yacht. The contract between the cast and me is: ‘Please make us a great show that people will love — and please be fair in portraying who we are and what we do.'”

Jason Gaskell’s Biggest Below Deck Mediterranean Scandals
In Season 7 of Below Deck Mediterranean, Jason Gaskell’s behavior and attitude toward the rest of the crew became a hot topic. In his last few charters, the vibes were completely off, and it caused more drama than what was necessary. Of course, the show is not without its scandals, which make for great television.
In an episode in 2022, Gaskell made it clear that he was considering quitting. “Sometimes, it just doesn’t click, and it’s just not clicking,” he said in a clip (via E! News).
“If I’m that much of a f***ing cancer to a situation, f***ing end it for me. I feel closer to the fish in the water than the deck crew.” At the time, Captain Sandy Yawn told him that she needed him to stay and stick it out until she could find a replacement (she has had uncomfortable discussions with her crew before, even potentially needing to fire an employee). To Gaskell he obliged.
This season was challenging for Gaskell because he could not form a bond with the crew, which Courtney Veale spoke to CheatSheet about in a September 2022 interview.
“I guess it fell into the fact that me, Storm, and Zee being quite close, just because we had that banter going, and he just didn’t really ever want to kind of be involved in it,” she said of how her friendships may have excluded Gaskell. “That’s how I feel. So maybe that happening, he just started to go back into his shell. I hope that’s not the case. I hope it didn’t have anything to do with me being close to the boys. But honestly, I don’t know. Me and Jason aren’t really that close. We never really spoke about deep stuff.”
Why Was Chef Dave White Upset With Jason Gaskell?
Jason Gaskell also ruffled some feathers when he voiced his support for Chief Stew Natasha Webb, who had an unpleasant falling out with chef Dave White. On an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Gaskell was asked whose side he was on (via CheatSheet).
“I’m 100% on Natasha’s side,” Gaskell revealed. The news reportedly came as a shock to White, and when he learned about what Gaskell had said, he claimed to have supported him when things were not going well onboard. White expressed his surprise and disappointment on the Another Below Deck Podcast (via CheatSheet).
“There were a few times where you’ll see in pictures where me and Jason aren’t there. That’s because I’m sitting down with him and we’re chatting,” White said. “I’m actually supporting the guy. I can’t believe he said that.”
Will Below Deck Mediterranean Season 8, which is confirmed to air in 2023, have as much drama, or will the crew mesh well? And who will be joining the cast this time around?
