Speaking to the outlet before the release of Did I Ever Tell You This?, the New Zealand actor explained that after his diagnosis, and as he started treatment, he suddenly found himself with “nothing to do”.
Having worked on films almost non-stop since the age of 24, the 75-year-old found this new lifestyle difficult to adjust to.
He described being suddenly “deprived” of the human connection he felt through his work, and admitted he simply “loves working”.
So the Golden Globe nominee turned to writing to keep busy, although with no intention of compiling any type of book at the end.
