Kate Middleton knows a thing or two about being a mom. While the mother of three is now a pro at taking care of her kids, Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, this was not always the case. A fact that Kate admitted to after feeling “so isolated” in a rental that cost $930 per month during her first year of motherhood.
Stepping out for an engagement with Achieving for Children, a local nonprofit group in Windsor, the Duchess of Cambridge spoke with staff members and mothers with young children who received support from the center. Specifically, the conversation revolved around Kate’s platform. And that is the importance of the early years of development and the “critical role caretakers play” during that time.
Known for “putting people at ease,” Kate was not pretentious in her choice of attire. Wearing a blue and white blazer, white top, dark blue pants, and flats, Kate interacted with parents and their babies, learning more about how caretakers can help infants thrive. Something that the Duchess may wish she had more of during her first year of motherhood.
Where Prince William Was In The Months After Prince George Was Born
In the days leading up to Prince George’s birth, Kate and Prince William stayed at Kensington Palace given its proximity to the hospital where Kate would give birth. But, the space and the help that Kate had were short-lived. This is because after the tot was born, the family of three moved into a farmhouse in the countryside. And in doing so, cut Kate off from the support she did not know at the time she would need while Prince William was working nightshift with search and rescue.
“I had just had George, and William was still working with search and rescue, so we came up here when George was a tiny, tiny little baby in the middle of Anglesey,” Kate recalled. “It was so isolated, so cut off, I didn’t have my family around me…”

Despite having homes within the family to live in, Kate and Prince William chose to rent instead. The farmhouse they rented cost $930 per month and was very cut off from society. And as soon as Prince William’s time with search and rescue was over, the young family moved back to Windsor to be supported by family.
Why Kate Middleton Wants A Normal Life For Her Kids
While Kate is fortunate to be spoiled by her husband and has support galore these days for her children, that does not mean she wants them to grow up feeling privileged. The opposite, in fact. And because of this, Kate works hard to ensure the future senior royals have a normal life as kids.
“She wants to emulate her upbringing, living in the countryside with a close-knit family,” a friend of Kate’s explained. “She desperately wants that normality for her own kids.”
This normalcy comes with being involved in the kids’ day-to-day lives and being present, despite having help from a nanny. As such, it is not uncommon to see either Kate or Prince William at pickup from school or to have them photographed as a family in the countryside away from it all.
While motherhood may have started off rocky for Kate, she has proven it is possible to not only be a royal but a hands-on mom as well.
