Cameron Diaz and Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey released her debut album in 1990 and became a huge star. Her first four singles all hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This tied Carey with the Jackson 5, who were the last ones to accomplish this before her. Throughout the 90s, Carey dominated the music scene. She had a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in every year of the decade.

However, such success can bring some criticism along with it. Sometimes, the criticism can be a bit mean. Such was the case with actress Cameron Diaz, who had a few choice words for Carey’s music back in the late 90s.

But the story doesn’t stop there. There was a moment when Carey confronted Diaz at a restaurant after the fact. There was also a picture of the two posing together years later.

Here’s the full story of the heated battle between Mariah Carey and Cameron Diaz.

Cameron Diaz Calls Mariah Carey’s Music ‘Torture’ In An Interview

In 1998, Mariah Carey released her first compilation album. It was released less than one decade after her first album, yet it was titled “#1’s.” The record compiled Carey’s first 13 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was hard to imagine that Carey had amassed so many number one hits in less than a decade.

At the time, it was also pretty inconceivable that Carey would eventually become the solo artist with the most Billboard Hot 100 number ones. In 2008, Carey accomplished this feat. She beat the record previously set by Elvis Presley when her single “Touch My Body” topped the chart. In 2019, her Christmas classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You” topped the chart 25 years after its original release.

With all this success, it seems like most people enjoy Carey’s music and genuinely appreciate her talent.

Cameron Diaz is not most people. The same year that Carey’s first number ones album was released, Diaz did an interview where she expressed a strong dislike of Carey’s music.

“If you really want to torture me, sit me in a room strapped to a chair and put Mariah Carey’s records on,” the actress was quoted as saying.

This comment obviously hurt Carey and she wasn’t going down without a fight.

Mariah Carey Confronted Cameron Diaz At A Restaurant

A year later, Carey spoke with FHM magazine about a time when she ran into Diaz at a restaurant in New York.

“People think that I’m this little girl-next-door and they can say stuff about me and Ill never check them if they run into me. Wrong. I decided I should seize the opportunity to straighten a few things out.”

Carey said that when she approached the actress, Diaz said that “her words had been twisted.” According to Carey, she decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.

It didn’t seem like Carey had much reason to be concerned with Diaz’s feelings on her music anyway. That same year, Carey released her album “Rainbow” which included the hit single “Heartbreaker.” The song went to number one, becoming Carey’s 14th number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her “#1’s” album was only a year old and she was already adding to the list.

The music video also made headlines when it became one of the most expensive videos ever made. The video featured Carey playing two roles: herself and Bianca. Bianca was a character that Carey created. She was Carey’s rival and archenemy. Although she doesn’t speak in the video, Carey would talk in a British accent when playing her in the future. Bianca made several appearances in the years to come.

Perhaps Carey’s experience with comments like Diaz’s was part of her inspiration for Bianca.

The Two Pose Together Years After The Incident

Years later in 2017, a photo emerged of Diaz and Carey posing together. The two stars were posing in a group photo snapped by Diaz’s sister-in-law Nicole Richie.

Richie posted the picture to her Instagram, captioning it: “Happy Monday my lambs.”

It’s unclear when or where the photo was taken. It looks like Carey is dressed in one of the gowns she would wear during her concert. Was it taken after one of Carey’s live shows? If so, was Diaz in attendance all those years after calling her music “torture?” We might never know for sure.

What we do know is that Carey is further enough away from Diaz’s past comments that the two can be in the same room together.

After the critical and commercial failure of Glitter, Carey made a comeback in 2005 with “The Emancipation of Mimi” album. The record saw the single “We Belong Together” become a huge success and one of the biggest songs of the year. It also became Carey’s 16th Billboard Hot 100 number one. Carey would also return to acting, receiving praise in 2009 for her performance as a social worker in Precious.

It’s also the Christmas season, the time of year when Carey takes over as the Queen of Christmas. Her single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” climbs the chart every year, as it has become a modern Christmas classic.

It certainly seems like Carey is accomplished and received enough praise regardless of what Diaz might think.
