Sam Heughan is going to be appearing in a very different TV role next week when his new series The Couple Next Door kicks off on Channel 4 in the UK.
Heughan, 43, who is best known as swoon-worthy 18th-century Highlander Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander, is going to be swapping his horse for a motorbike in this six-part thriller.
Speaking to media including Daily Express at a recent Q&A in London, Heughan said: “I’ve been working on Outlander for a decade and I think it’s hard to find roles that are perhaps not only different but also fit into a time period.
“I just finished shooting the last season [seven] of Outlander, so this fit perfectly.”
Heughan said he was similar to co-star Eleanor Tomlinson, who is known across the world for her portrayal of fiery Cornish beauty Demelza in Poldark, and who wanted to break out of the corset with a very different role in The Couple Next Door.

Written by David Allison, The Couple Next Door is loosely based on the Dutch series New Neighbours but goes on its in own direction.
The drama features an all-star cast including aforementioned Poldark actress Tomlinson, How To Get Away With Murder and Harry Potter’s Alfred Enoch and Australian star Jessica De Gouw of Dracula fame.
Tomlinson and Enoch play married couple Evie and Pete, who moved to the suburbs of Leeds, where they strike up a friendship with fellow married pair Heughan’s police officer Danny and De Gouw’s yoga teacher Becka.
The show follows the changing dynamic between the central quartet with each of them having secrets, which start to come spilling out over time.
The Couple Next Door reunited Heughan with director Dries Vos after the pair worked together on Channel 4’s series Suspect with the Jamie Fraser star saying how much he “loved” working with the filmmaker previously.
“For me, I jumped at the chance when I read the scripts and I just loved this character – very different to what I’ve played before,” he said.
Teasing Danny, Heughan said the policeman was a “rather ambiguous man” and “on the surface, you think he’s one thing and by the end of the show you might perhaps feel differently about him”.
Adding: “A great opportunity, a great cast as well. I adore these people – some of my best friends definitely.”
Audiences will be getting two episodes with the show airing on Monday, November 27 9pm and the second instalment the following evening on Tuesday, November 28 at 9.15pm.
Heughan has been working on a slew of projects and earlier this year appeared in the romantic movie It’s All Coming Back To Me alongside Priyanka Chopra, reprising his role as Jamie in Outlander season seven and also squeezing in season two of his travelogue with fellow actor Graham McTavish in Men In Kilts.
The Couple Next Door starts on Channel 4 on Monday, November 27
Outlander seasons 1-7 are available to stream on Starz in the USA and on Lionsgate+ in the UK
