Shocking video shows the moment an off-lead bulldog mauled a fold of Highland cows and their young calves in a ‘distressing’ attack.

The out-of-control black and white bulldog, called Winston, is seen running into the Glasgow field and biting at the legs and tail of one of the cows as it’s owner tried to call it back.

The cattle then desperately try to escape the dog and charge back at the canine when it turns its attention to their calves. One cow is filmed repeatedly striking the animal with its horns – causing it to flip in the air.

The attack comes just days after an American Bulley savaged a police horse once pictured with Queen Consort Camilla.

Conor Ashe, who filmed the incident, said he was on a walk in Pollock Park when he heard a ‘commotion with the cows mooing’.

He ran back towards the commotion and saw an off-lead dog was in with the cows.

‘It was hanging off the back of one of the cow’s tails and it was going after the calves. It was stressful to watch because we couldn’t do anything,’ Mr Ashe, 27, said.

‘It had already been on the leg of one of the cows for about a minute before I started filming so we were worried that it could kill or seriously injure one of them.’

‘One cow was limping after the attack, I couldn’t see if it was badly injured but it didn’t look right.’

Mr Ashe recalled how Winston’s owner tried to call him back, but the dog ‘wasn’t paying attention.’

‘I think he was scared to go get his dog in case he got attacked by the cows too,’ he said of the owner. ‘Once they eventually got the dog back they ran away. They didn’t hang about to check if the cows were okay.’

The passer-by reported the incident to staff at the Burrell Collection who said they would inform Park Rangers of the attack.

Mr Ashe added: ‘Everyone watching was pretty shocked.’

Furious council bosses have described the incident as ‘distressing’ and reiterated that dog owners are ‘expected to keep their dogs under close control while in the park’.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council told the Record: ‘This is a shocking incident that will have caused significant distress for the cattle and their very young calves.

‘Dog owners are expected to keep their dogs under close control while in the park, which means they should respond immediately to any command.

‘If a dog cannot be kept under close control then it should be on a lead at all times. We will be reporting this matter to the police.’

MailOnline has approached Police Scotland, Pollock Park and Glasgow City Council for comment.

The Pollok Park Highland cattle are prizewinning animals, taking part in around seven local agricultural shows per year.

Highland cattle were first brought to Pollok Country Park over 180 years ago in the early 19th century by the Maxwell family, who owned Pollok Estate and lived in Pollok House.

The Pollok Park attack comes just days after officers seized an American Bully dog that savaged a veteran police horse in Victoria Park, Hackney, London, on Wednesday.

Graphic footage posted to social media shows the attack and how the dog’s owner appears powerless to control his animal after letting it off the lead.

The bulldog, called Coco, is seen darting between the horse’s legs to bite it, at one point forcing it to drop to its knees.

The horse, named Urbane, suffered multiple bloody wounds on its body and legs.

Owner Hakan Niyazi, 24, claimed ‘gentle’ Coco had only reacted as she was ‘intimidated’ after encountering a horse for the first time when he took her out for a training session to socialise with other dogs at a park near his home.

Mr Niyazi said the horse became ‘skittish’ when Coco approached it out of curiosity and then dog had then been ‘defending itself’ believing it was coming under attack.

He now fears his pet, which was seized by officers, will be destroyed.

Urbane was once befriended and stroked by Queen Consort Camilla during a royal visit in 2019. The horse appeared calm and gentle when pictured with Camilla.
