Anytime lists of the best TV shows of all time are published, virtually everyone assumes that The Sopranos will be included. In almost every case, those assumptions turn out to be correct since The Sopranos remains one of the most acclaimed series in history.
Typically when people talk about The Sopranos’ main stars, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco, and Michael Imperioli come to mind. However, it could be argued that Drea De Matteo was one of the show’s most impactful actors. The star of two of The Sopranos’ most disturbing scenes, de Matteo’s portrayal of Adriana La Cerva made her one of the characters fans cared about most. While there are many reasons why De Matteo’s portrayal of Adriana was so stellar, one of the biggest is how believable she was in the role.
Seemingly born with a rebellious spirit, de Matteo had that in common with her Sopranos character. For proof of how rebellious de Matteo was, all you have to do is look at the fact that her parents kicked her out and how she reacted to that.
Why Did Drea De Matteo’s Parents Kick Her Out?
Given how wonderful Drea de Matteo’s The Sopranos performance was, it makes sense that the powers that be in Hollywood couldn’t wait to give her other opportunities. Even still, it is amazing that when Friends got a spin-off based around Matt LeBlanc’s character Joey, de Matteo was cast as one of the show’s main characters.
Even though the Friends spin-off Joey is largely forgotten, it was a huge deal before it premiered. For that reason, People published an article that featured interesting facts about de Matteo in the lead-up to Joey’s premiere.
Most of the facts included in that list weren’t that mind-blowing. For example, revealing that de Matteo gets nervous on set sometimes, she likes going on road trips, she’s loyal, and she loves fashion seemed relatively unremarkable.
On the other hand, People revealed a truly fascinating and hilarious series of events that took place in de Matteo’s youth.
When de Matteo turned 18 years old, she went out and got a tattoo of a tiny cross on her ankle. In this day and age, it is incredibly common for people to get tattoos but at that time it was less common and clearly her parents were outraged by her decision. “My mom was so mad, she threw me out.”

Given that de Matteo was still figuring out what she was doing with her life at that time, being kicked out of her parent’s home must have felt like a huge deal for her. Despite that, de Matteo didn’t respond to her mom’s decision to kick her out by apologizing.
Instead, de Matteo rebelled against her parents more by going to get more tattoos. “So I went out and had her name tattooed on my wrist. My dad’s too.”
Does Drea De Matteo Have Any Children?
Even though Drea de Matteo has been a celebrity for decades as of the time of this writing, she has never become a staple of the tabloids. Considering how rebellious de Matteo was in her youth, that seems pretty surprising.
Instead of going a little crazy once she became rich and famous, de Matteo seems to have opted to focus on her career and her home life. While de Matteo’s fans may be aware of her career highlights, many of them likely won’t know that de Matteo has become a mother of two herself.
After de Matteo met and fell for the singer Shooter Jennings, the couple started dating in 2001. Years later, de Matteo and Jennings seemed to be poised to make things official when they got engaged in 2009.
Ultimately, de Matteo and Jennings never tied the knot, but they did welcome a daughter named Alabama and a son named Waylon into the world. Sadly, de Matteo and Jennings ultimately split up.
Once de Matteo became a mom, she may have wondered if her kids would rebel against her the way she did with her mom. However, from the outside looking in it seems like de Matteo encourages her kids too much for them to rebel against her the same way she did with her mom.
A perfect example of de Matteo seemingly encouraging her kids to express themselves took place at a 2019 red-carpet event. When de Matteo and her kids attended the MTV VMAs that year, she let her 11-year-old daughter carry a doll with her down the red carpet.
Even though a lot of observers found it very sweet that de Matteo’s daughter was carrying a doll, most stars would never let their child do that. After all, most stars seemingly want their families to be picture-perfect and they wouldn’t want to be upstaged by their child’s toy.
