Star Wars' Mark Hamill becomes voice of Ukraine's air raid alert | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Mark Hamill, 71, is voicing the English language warnings on the Air Alert app, in a bid to urge Ukrainians to take cover when Vladimir Putin’s forces attack.

His voice can be heard with a Jedi Knights gravitas, saying: “Attention. Air raid alert. Proceed to the nearest shelter.”

The Star Wars legend has been a firm supporter of Ukraine and was seen in a video meeting with members of the country’s army earlier this week.

Mark is working to raise money to help arm Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops, while the meeting led him to decide to lend his voice to the system.

Air Alert is a downloadable app linked to Ukraine’s air defence system, with Mark’s involvement hoping to save more lives.

When air raid sirens start howling, the app warns Ukrainians that Russian missiles, bombs and deadly exploding drones may be coming.

His voice advises: “Don’t be careless. Your overconfidence is your weakness.”

When the warning passes, Mark announces on the app that “the air alert is over”.

He then signs off with the iconic Luke Skywalker quote: “May the Force be with you.”

Speaking to The Associated Press about the Ukrainian war, Mark said: “A fairy tale about good versus evil is resonant with what´s going on in Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian people rallying to the cause and responding so heroically… It’s impossible not to be inspired by how they´ve weathered this storm.”

An ambassador for United 24, Mark has been raising funds to buy reconnaissance drones for Ukrainian forces on the front line.

In the invasion’s first year, air-raid alarms sounded more than 19,000 times across Ukraine.

The app has so far been downloaded more than 14 million times, with Mark hoping his voice improves this number even more.

Speaking of the hope of his latest project, the Hollywood star added: “It does inspire people.

“Everyone flashes back to being six-years-old again. And if the movie can help people through hard times, so much the better.”
