In its early days, MTV’s Teen Mom franchise earned a lot of criticism for how many of the young parents’ stories were played out so publicly. Not all the show’s teenage moms had great experiences, though many stuck with MTV for years. For Chelsea DeBoer, née Houska, her story started out rough, but by the end of her more than decade-long run on the series, things were definitely looking up.
While there was plenty of speculation about the real reason why she quit the franchise, Chelsea’s official explanation was that her life was moving in a new direction. Turns out, it definitely was; the DeBoers got an HGTV deal, so while they won’t be airing their personal lives on reality TV, they’ll be appearing in other ways. Many other former MTV stars quit Teen Mom, too, but Chelsea’s life is probably the most interesting just because of how everything went down. Looking back, though, fans who have followed her all along say one thing doesn’t quite add up, and they think Chelsea was hiding something from viewers and even her own family.
Chelsea DeBoer (Née Houska) Has Always Been A Fan Favorite
When 16 and Pregnant first aired Chelsea (then Houska) and Adam’s story, fans loved to hate on Adam. Even as a teen (he’s had plenty of legal and personal troubles since), Adam didn’t seem to be very nice to Chelsea.
Their story essentially ended with Adam not having much to do with Chelsea or their daughter Aubree, who later hyphenated her last name to include her mom and stepdad’s.
But fans who followed Chelsea from her beginnings on MTV were stoked that the show helped build her net worth to the point where she no longer needed her dad’s help.
And when she met Cole DeBoer, fans were even more thrilled. The couple seemed picture-perfect, and still do, years later.
Yet Chelsea’s life could have been very different, according to one fan theory.
Fans Love Chelsea, But They Have Some Thoughts…
In a Reddit forum dedicated to discussing MTV’s Teen Mom franchise, fans talked about their “wildest” theories, but according to some of them, the theory about Chelsea isn’t really that wild.
Remembering that MTV didn’t show every aspect of Chelsea and Adam’s relationship back when she was expecting Aubree (and during the baby’s infancy), fans think they saw enough to assume that Chelsea was a typical immature teen at the time.

Discussing her relationship on-screen with Adam, fans thought Chelsea’s “level of maturity and self-respect at the time” were very low. Yet for some reason, Chelsea chose to stay with Adam, taking him back repeatedly despite how poorly he seemed to treat her.
Did Chelsea Houska Want Another Baby With Adam Lind?
The theory one fan presented is that Chelsea did, when Aubree was little, want another baby with Adam. Though the top-ranked comment was this fan’s “wild” theory, others agreed, saying “I would take this as fact, not a theory.”
Case in point? “She was gleefully telling everyone she knew that she might be pregnant by him a second time, then she started acting upset about it when they all had bad reactions to the news.”
Other people who watched the episodes agreed “100000000%,” also pointing out that at the time, Chelsea had said her IUD ‘fell out,’ at a “rather convenient time.”
But why would Chelsea want a second baby with Adam, given their history? “I think she thought he’d come around more if there was a second baby,” writes one fan, also suggesting that Adam having a baby with someone else at the time (daughter Paislee with now-ex Taylor) made her think there would be less time for her and their baby.
Of course, things didn’t end well for Taylor and Adam, either; Adam Lind reportedly gave up parental rights to his daughter Paislee in 2018, and she was officially adopted by her stepdad.
Though fans were relieved when Chelsea married Cole, another fan pointed out that one fact about their relationship seems to corroborate the earlier theory.
Fans think that Chelsea intentionally went off birth control before marrying Cole (their first child together was born pre-wedding) because she had been trying to get pregnant with Adam, but was unsuccessful. So, fans think, she assumed it would take a while to get pregnant with her soon-to-be hubby.
In the end, none of the speculation matters, fans know — because Chelsea seems super happy with how her life turned out, sans Adam.
