When singers rise to the top of the music business, it doesn’t take long for them to disappear from the public eye. Thankfully for Katy Perry and all of her fans, however, she has proven to have staying power.

Somehow able to release many songs that have topped the charts, many of Perry’s hits have remained popular for years. One of Perry’s songs that has really stuck with people is “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”.

Released in 2011, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” became one of the songs of the summer and still puts smiles on people’s faces more than a decade after its release. As a result of that lasting popularity, many fans have continued to be interested in the song.

At face value, it seems like “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” is a lightweight song that doesn’t deserve a more profound analysis. Once fans learn the story behind the song’s lyrics, however, they are likely to see it in a new light.

What Is The Meaning Behind Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”

Throughout entertainment history, artists have been trying to capture how it feels to spend the night partying away with your friends. Unfortunately, in many cases, it feels like musicians and filmmakers fall short of that goal.

Even though a lot of listeners have never experienced the things that are described in “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’s” lyrics, it is easy to envision how fun they would be. As it turns out, it seems like there is a very good reason why “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’s” feels so sincere.

After “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” became a hit, Perry was asked to explain the song’s origin. As it turns out, Perry didn’t have to try very hard to come up with the song’s lyrics since most of them were based on her real experiences.

“There’s nothing better than an impromptu dance party with my friends. My track Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) is a song about debauchery because I had one of those nights in Santa Barbara. We went out to this place called Wildcat and got crazy.”

While Perry made it clear that she did almost all the things that are mentioned in the song’s lyrics, she stated that one aspect was purely fictional.

“We had a couple of beers and danced until we died, then brought the party back to the hotel room. Most of that song is actual truth, apart from the ménage à trois… unfortunately! But, yes, streaking in the park, that’s what we did, so we had to write a song about it the next day!”

“Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’s” co-writer Bonnie McKee agreed with Perry’s take on the inspiration for the song in a separate interview with alexkazemi.com.

“TGIF is pretty much a word for word description of our trip to Santa Barbara, so I love that one. It’s really kitschy and fun and makes me nostalgic.”

How Much Money Did Katy Perry Make From “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”?

When “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” came out, it didn’t take long for it to become a huge hit. The kind of song that people could spend the night dancing to, the song quickly became a party anthem which led to it topping the charts for two weeks.

As a result of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’s” overwhelming popularity, the song started racking up huge digital sales in 2011. In fact, Billboard reported that the song became Perry’s best-selling digital single at the time.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, 4 million digital singles of the hit song sold in 2011 alone. Now that it has been a decade since that article was published, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’s” sales figures certainly must have increased since then. Of course, as the years have added up since the song’s initial release, its sales certainly would have slowed down more and more.

When Perry released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, she also put out a music video that became very popular. As of the time of this writing, that music video has been viewed more than 1.4 billion times on YouTube alone.

Between single sales and YouTube profits, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” definitely has made a lot of money both for the music studio and Perry. However, there is no way to know exactly how much Perry has profited from the song since the details of her contract decide how much of the song’s profits she receives.
