He was born in Tyler, Texas on September 17, 1995.
The son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Pat Mahomes, he stood out as a multisport athlete in high school, playing football, basketball and baseball.
Mahomes was highly-rated as a top recruit for both Major League Baseball and college football, being named the top prospect overall for the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft and ultimately being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round, but opted not to sign and instead committed to play football at Texas Tech University.
He initially played both football and baseball for the college, though later left the baseball team in 2016 to focus his efforts entirely on football. Playing quarterback, Mahomes continued to impress as one of the top college quarterbacks in the United States, winning the Sammy Baugh Award for the top passer in college football after the 2016 season.
