After eight years, Swedish pop star Robyn is back with a new album, Honey.

The singer went on an eight-year hiatus following her 2010 three-part album Body Talk, which featured the popular single Dancing On My Own. Prior to that, the singer broke into Britain’s public consciousness in 2007 with With Every Heartbeat.

Her new album was released on Friday, October 26, 2018 to positive reviews, with the Financial Times calling it ‘low-key but impressive’.

Here is all you need to know about Robyn including who she is and what is her net worth.

Who is Robyn?

Robyn was born Robin Miriam Carlsson in Sweden on June 12, 1979. Her parents were in charge of an experimental theatre troupe called Scheherazade, meaning that the singer spent most of her life on the road between the ages of six months and seven years.

She wrote her first song at the age of 11, about her parents’ marriage falling apart. ‘All my sad songs about heartbreak and stuff — I think it’s really still about the divorce,’ she told the New York Times in 2018.

Her pop career began in earnest when Robyn was 15 years old, when she signed with RCA Records in 1994. She had a co-writing credit on her debut album, Robyn Is Here and in 1997 scored two big hits in the US with Show Me Love and Do You Know (What It Takes), both of which ended up in the Top 10.

Her follow-up album, My Truth, was a hit across Europe but was never released in America due to the fact that some tracks on the album were about Robyn’s personal experience of having an abortion.

She described her early career as ‘totally unpleasant’.

‘My manager was asked by the label to make sure I showed my youthfulness more. Whatever that meant.’

After struggling with record labels for creative control, Robyn started her own label, Konichiwa Records, at the age of 24.

‘A lot of people told me that they thought I was crazy, and that I would lose a lot of money,’ she said.

‘If I would have followed their advice, none of this would have happened.’

This marked a new phase in Robyn’s career and in 2005 she released a new single, Be Mine, which was quickly followed by her fourth album, Robyn. It became No.1 in Sweden and won three Swedish Grammys in 2006.

Despite being a huge hit at home, the album only made it to the UK and US in 2007. The single ‘With Every Heartbeat’ became Robyn’s only UK No.1 single.

Throughout those three years Robyn was touring, only stopping in late 2008 to focus on her fifth album, which ended up being split into three installments. Body Talk featured the huge hits Dancing On My Own and Call Your Girlfriend.

And then for eight years, Robyn didn’t release an album.

She released an EP with Royskopp called Do It Again and embarked on a Do It Again tour, but cut it short after the death of her close friend Christian Falk.

Before his death, Falk, Robyn and Markus Jagerstedt, a musician, made an EP called Love Is Free, which was released in 2015, one year after Falk’s death.

While a tour was planned, it was cancelled after one performance. ‘It was much harder singing these songs than I thought,’ Robyn said at the time.

In February 2018, Robyn revealed that she would be releasing her new album this year, with the update coming nearly a year after her new song called Honey was featured on the soundtrack of the final season of Girls.

After the announcement, she played the new version of Honey, and released a new song called Missing U in August 2018.

The album, called Honey, was released on Friday, October 26.

Event Magazine’s Tim de Lisle gave it five out of five stars saying, it’s a different Robyn sound.

‘It’s quite unlike the last time we heard from her, when she released three albums in six months, all called Body Talk.

‘Like the best of Body Talk, the nine songs here are succinct, elegant and supremely organised, with the synths taking their cue from Robyn’s crystalline vocals. The difference is that the sound has become even easier on the ear.

Robyn was in a relationship with Olof Inger for eight years between 2003 and 2011. She then started dating videographer Max Vitali, but the couple separated for two years before reuniting again by 2018.

What is Robyn’s net worth?

Robyn’s net worth is estimated to be $10 million (£7.8m) according to Celebrity Net Worth.

In her career, she has had one UK No.1 single, four in the Top 10 and spent 11 weeks in the Top 10. In the US she had two Top 10 hits in the late 90s.

Her 2010 song Dancing On My Own was a huge hit and ended up being used on shows such as Gossip Girl, Orange Is the New Black, Girls and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

It has also been covered by Britain’s Got Talent contestant Calum Scott.

She also runs her own record label, having set it up in order to have creative control over her music.
