She was born in Chicago on January 13, 1970.

After studying film and English at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and graduating in 1991, Rhimes relocated to San Francisco and later Los Angeles to study screenwriting, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California.

After graduating, she worked various day jobs to make ends meet and later served as research director for the 1995 documentary Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream.

Afterwards, Rhimes worked as a writer for films like 1999’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, 2002’s Crossroads and 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

After, Rhimes would go on to serve as the showrunner for its popular spinoff series Private Practice starting in 2007 and also worked as the showrunner for highly-successful Scandal starting in 2012.

Rhimes also produced a number of other shows in the following years, including How to Get Away with Murder starting in 2014 and The Catch in 2016.

Shona Rhimes shows

Throughout her prolific career, Rhimes has amassed an impressive filmography that includes a number of hit TV shows. Utilizing her TV production company Shondaland, she’s been the driving force behind many popular shows across a number of genres.

Rhimes’s first TV show, Grey’s Anatomy, premiered as a midseason replacement on ABC in March 2005 and soon proved to be a breakout critical and commercial hit, still being in production. The success of the show prompted Rhimes to create a spinoff series called Private Practice, which again proved popular and ran from 2007 to 2013.

After premiering other shows like Seattle Grace: On Call and Seattle Grace: Message of Hope in 2009, Off the Map in 2011 and Gilded Lilys in 2012, Rhimes served as showrunner for the breakout political drama-thriller Scandal starting in 2012, which drew critical acclaim and ran until April 2018.

In 2014, Rhimes produced the drama series How to Get Away with Murder, which is still in production today. She later produced the comedy-drama show The Catch which ran from 2016 to 2017 and also in 2017 produced the period drama Still Star-Crossed.

2018 also saw Rhimes launch production of two new TV shows, the legal drama For the People and the action-drama Station 19.

Shonda Rhimes Netflix deal

On August 14, 2017, Netflix announced publicly that it had entered into a multiyear, exclusive deal with Rhimes in which all of her future productions would be Netflix Original shows.

After the blockbuster deal, Netflix formally announced in June 2018 that Rhimes’s first project under the deal would be for an adaptation of the New York Magazine story How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, based on the real life story of Anna Delvey, a Russian-German woman who posed as a wealthy socialite in New York City.

Rhimes spoke about her Netflix deal recently at the star-studded Women in Hollywood celebration by Elle Magazine in the Four Seasons Hotel ballroom in Beverly Hills, California, including how her salary of roughly $100 million (£75.8m) was inaccurate, though she ultimately declined to say how much the deal was worth.

During her speech, she took a deep breath and dropped a verbal bombshell: ‘I am the highest-paid showrunner in television.’

Her point was, in actuality, not to boast about her own success and wealth, but rather to call out the difference in how men and women broadcast their success and to inspire women.

‘The other day I came to this conclusion that men brag and women hide. Even when they don’t deserve to brag, men brag —Trump, Kavanaugh — and when men do deserve to brag, they are good at it. They do it so well. Men brag about everything, even things that aren’t things,’ she said.

Rhimes later added: ‘When I made a deal with Netflix, I let them say my salary wrong in the press and then I did as few interviews as possible and I put my head down and worked. In other words, I hid. I’m getting this award for inspiring other women; how can I inspire anyone if I’m hiding?’

She then revealed her salary status, prompting the room to erupt into a standing ovation.

Rhimes then said: ‘My point is that we need to set an example, because I am awesome and we are awesome which is another way of saying we have power.

‘We are powerful women and when we say we have power, what we are really saying is that we deserve to have power. We deserve whatever good thing it is that we are getting.

‘Demanding what you deserve can feel like a radical act.’

She ended her remarks saying: ‘The struggle we are in the midst of that feels so hard is hard. But it is not impossible.

‘Be a person who pulls other women, new women, different women, into your circle. Widen your circle to hold more people. Lose your judgments of who someone is based on what you’ve heard or what you assume.

‘Make some friends. Find some new sisters. Come together, work together, brag together, be powerful together and whenever we can we should be lifting one another up because lifting someone up is what lifts us.’
