After retiring as a player, Bird served in various roles, including as a special assistant in the Celtics’ front office, a consultant, and the president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers. Bird was awarded a basketball scholarship to Indiana University in 1974. Nonetheless, he struggled to fit in and dropped out after only one month. In college, he averaged 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.

He also received the Naismith Collegiate Player of the Year Award, among other honors and awards. The Boston Celtics selected Bird with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. After Bird arrived, the Celtics won 32 more games than they had previously.

For his outstanding performance, he was named Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-Star Team. He remained with the Celtics until he retired from the NBA in 1992.
