Thibaut Courtois was born on May 11, 1992, in the city of Bree in Flanders, to his Walloon father, Thierry Courtois, and a Flemish mother, Gitte Courtois. He was raised alongside his siblings, Valerie Courtois and Gaitan Courtois.
Courtois began his career with local side Bilzen V.V., playing as a left-back. Soon in 1999, he joined Racing Genk at the age of seven, and it was there that he was converted into a goalkeeper witnessing his abilities.
As a young boy, Courtois was clumsy and, at times, absent-minded. He once said he was thinking “too much” during a forward roll at gymnastics and completely took out his teacher.
Moreover, accidents were also common during his childhood. His mother, Gitte, admitted that she often had to drive him to the hospital. Gitte was a physiotherapist by profession at that time.
