Brands like Jeffree Star, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Kylie Cosmetics have to deal with counterfeit items on a regular basis, so this is nothing new.
Jergens Original Scent and Ultra Healing body moisturizers were the items in question, and it was customers who alerted Kao USA to the problem. According to Kao USA Inc.’s general counsel Sam Wood, “Although only a small number of counterfeit products have been detected, our Consumer Care Center was alerted to this issue after consumers gave us their bottles of Jergens Ultra Healing and Jergens Original Scent,” he says. According to them, it appeared to be different from what they were used to. Fake cosmetics and fragrances are common, but we rarely hear about counterfeit skin-care products, which makes this case stand out.

Voluntarily Recalling Jergens Ultra Healing Bottles
There has been a voluntary recall of certain lots of Jergens Ulta Healing 3-ounce and 10-ounce packages of the popular drugstore moisturizer by Kao USA Inc., which owns a variety of well-known skin and hair care brands. Some Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizers may contain Pluralibacter gergoviae, according to a statement from Kao USA “a type of bacteria that, in most cases, provides no health concern to healthy individuals. If you have a compromised immune system, for example, you may be more susceptible to diseases.”
An opportunistic infection, Pluralibacter gergoviae, is a rare human disease, according to board-certified dermatologist Jeffrey Fromowitz, MD, of Florida. Immunosuppressed patients and those who have been in the hospital for an extended period of time are the most in danger, as are individuals at either end of the age spectrum. Dr. Fromowitz says that this bacterium has already been linked to the recall of cosmetic skin-care products. Because it is resistant to parabens, which are commonly used in creams to reduce the danger of bacterial contamination, it is of special importance.”
If you have any 3-ounce or 10-ounce bottles, Kao USA is urging you to check the lot numbers to see if they are affected by this recall. There are six lot codes on the back of the 3-ounce bottle that are affected: ZU712851, ZU712911, ZU712861, ZU722851, ZU712871, ZU722881, and ZU712881. All of the 10-ounce bottles have a ZU722741, ZU732791, ZU722771, ZU732801, or ZU732811 on the bottom of them, which are the impacted lot codes.
