An 18-year-old South Carolina high school senior has been charged with attempted murder after shooting his dad because “I can’t deal with him anymore.”
Jayden McGirt has also been charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, WRDW reported.
Police were called to the scene by a woman who was at the North Augusta house to help the victim clean his home. She told officers that everyone was in a “great mood” throughout the night.
She said she went into the garage when McGirt’s father told his son to go to bed and while there, heard gunshots. She ran back into the house and found the dad on the floor and the teen holding a black handgun. When she asked what happened, McGirt allegedly replied, “I can’t deal with him anymore.”
Police arrived on the scene just before midnight and found the victim, 37, in a puddle of blood with a gunshot wound to the upper right leg. According to the police report, officers couldn’t determine how many wounds there were because of the blood.
The report says the father was drifting in and out of consciousness and repeatedly said he “was going to die.” He was listed in critical condition at Augusta University Medical Center.

McGirt fled the scene before officers arrived, but they found him sitting on a curb not far away, the report said. Officers noted a strong smell of alcohol on the young man, who told the officers he was sorry and “loved his dad.”
He also told them he needed to go to bed so he could get up and go to graduation practice the next morning. Instead, he spent the night in the Aiken County Jail, where he’s being held without bond, according to jail records.
The police report also said that officers have responded to the home several times in the past for well-being checks and domestic disputes.
