Authorities in Wisconsin have reported the capture of a woman in Illinois who disappeared after removing her Department of Corrections monitoring bracelet and leaving a group home.
Police in Posen, Illinois, have confirmed to WISN that Morgan Geyser was located at a Thornton truck stop, where she was found with another person. The two had reportedly traveled to Posen by bus before being taken into custody.
Geyser, aged 23, was last seen Saturday with an adult companion in Madison, Wisconsin. Recently, she had been transferred to a group home to receive treatment for a psychotic spectrum disorder, although the court has kept the precise location of this facility undisclosed.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted a concerning 12-hour delay between the time Geyser cut off her monitoring device and the moment authorities were alerted. Officials have not yet provided reasons for this delay.
In 2014, at the age of 12, Geyser, along with Anissa Weier, was involved in a chilling incident where they almost fatally stabbed a female classmate. The attack occurred after a sleepover celebrating Geyser’s birthday when the two lured their classmate into the woods and inflicted 19 stab wounds on her, leaving her for dead.
The girls claimed they carried out the attack to appease “Slenderman,” an internet meme. They also said they believed their families would be harmed if they did not attack their classmate, who survived.
Geyser and Weier were found not guilty due to mental disease or defect. Weier was released from a mental institution in 2021. Geyser remained institutionalized despite seeking her release on four occasions.
However, in March, a judge granted Geyer’s petition for conditional release. In July, a Sun Prairie group home rescinded its offer to take in Geyser as a resident. Geyser’s attorney said it was due to negative publicity.
The victim’s family said in a statement to WISN that she is safe amid Geyser’s disappearance this weekend.
This story is developing.
