North Carolina firefighters responding to an illegal burn Sunday morning found human remains in the debris of the fire pit.
Cary police told WTVD that crews also found a man in an RV at the scene, critically injured from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A woman at the scene was unharmed.
Investigators were unable to identify anything about the remains found in the debris because of their condition.
A neighbor called police about the illegal trash burn shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday.
Police said that a couple lived at the home, which was undergoing renovations, and that they had brought two RVs onto the property to live in during the work on the house, according to WGHP. The man found in the RV was said to be the homeowner, but it wasn’t clear if the woman was his wife. Police said she was cooperating with investigators.
Investigators said that the fire pit was set up to burn debris from the renovation project.
The names of the people involved have not been released.
