Judge Denies State’s Move to Block Conditional Release of Slender Man Stabber

A Wisconsin judge approved the move of one of the girls involved in the 2014 Slender Man stabbing out of a state mental health hospital where she has been confined since she was 12 years old and to a new facility where she will have more freedom.

Morgan Geyser, now 22, will still be in custody and will be monitored by GPS at the new facility in Sun Prairie, WISN reported.

Geyser and Anissa Weier attacked a classmate in 2014, stabbing the girl 19 times and nearly killing her, as CrimeOnline reported. They said they did it to appease the fictional “Slender Man” character from an internet meme.

Both were found not guilty due to mental disease or defect. Weier was released from a mental institution in 2021, but Geyser has remained institutionalized despite seeking release four times.

A judge approved the conditional release earlier this year, and the Department of Health Services challenged the order. The challenge was denied in April, and Judge Scott Wagner formally approved the release earlier this month. He approved the selection of the Sun Prairie facility in a hearing Thursday morning, WISN said.

“The DHS has found a great spot for Morgan. So it was a very substantive hearing and a good result for her,” her attorney, Anthony Cotton, said.

Sun Praire’s city attorney, Kathleen McDaniel, argued against the facility choice, saying residents might see Geyser walking outside and become upset “due to the notoriety of the case.”

But Wagner disagreed.

“I think this plan — and it took us a while to get here. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a, a good balance of all those concerns. And that’s why I’m approving it, and we’re going to move forward,” the judge said.

Cotton was pleased with the decision.

“I think what everybody wants is that she will readjust to society,” he said. “She’s been in custody for 10 years now. I mean, imagine being 12 years old and now in your early 20s and you’ve never left confinement. It’s horrible. So this facility really will allow her to grow as a person and I think be as a safer and better member of the community.”

The transfer is expected to take place next week.
