Illinois Woman Charged With Murder After Decomposed Remains Found in Storage Unit

Authorities in Illinois have identified decomposed remains found in a locked storage unit last fall as a former small town police chief, but it is unclear what, if anything, will happen with the woman charged with concealing his death.

Marcy Oglesby, 50, was charged in February with multiple counts relating to the death of Richard Young, 71, with whom she reportedly had a relationship, according to KWQC. But earlier this month, a judge dropped several of the charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery by administering dangerous substances, and concealment of a homicidal death, after her attorney argued that the charges violated her right to a speedy trial.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Young’s body — unidentified at the time — was found in a Maquon storage unit last October when Knox County deputies were called to investigate a suspicious odor coming from the unit. Oglesby met the deputies and the facilities management and unlocked the unit, telling them the smell was from an opossum that had died inside.

But when deputies asked what was in a large box inside, Oglesby told them it was a human body. She was immediately arrested for concealing a body.

In February, however, investigators upgraded the charges and identified the decedent as Young, a former Maquon village police chief. They charged Oglesby with putting high doses of eye drops in his food and drink, KWQC said.

Outside court proceedings, officials had not identified Young as the victim. According to CBS News, DNA test results came in this week with the confirmation.

Jail records show that Oglesby remains behind bars, charged with two counts of forgery, two counts of possession of a firearm without requisite firearm owner’s identification card, and one count of concealment of a death, according to KWQC. A pretrial conference on those charges is scheduled for March 3.

Prosecutors have said they will appeal the March 16 ruling dropping the other charges.
