A teenager from Arizona has been sentenced to several years in prison following a violent assault on his girlfriend after she refused to leave her home to speak with him earlier this year.

On Wednesday, Maricopa County Superior Judge Tracy R. Nadzieja sentenced 16-year-old Troy Aguilar-Olmos to 3 1/2 years in a state correctional facility for the attack. This decision came after Aguilar-Olmos accepted a plea deal, admitting guilt to two counts of aggravated assault involving domestic violence. Having pleaded as an adult, Aguilar-Olmos was credited with 87 days already served, according to court documents.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office revealed in a news release that in March, then 15-year-old Aguilar-Olmos threatened to “shoot and kill” his girlfriend if she did not come outside to meet him. Upon her eventual exit from the residence, he allegedly “strangled her, pointed a gun at her back, and punched her several times.”

“The incident involving this young woman is truly tragic. No one should ever experience fear or violence in a relationship, regardless of the offender’s age,” stated Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell in a statement. “While today’s sentencing cannot erase the trauma she suffered, it represents a step towards justice.”

During a briefing on the matter, Mitchell highlighted the fortunate presence of the victim’s sister’s boyfriend, who managed to take the gun away from Aguilar-Olmos, potentially averting further harm.

Authorities said that shortly after the attack, Aguilar-Olmos was located at his parents’ home and taken into custody.

However, Aguilar-Olmos did not stop terrorizing the victim after his arrest. According to a report from Phoenix CBS affiliate KTVK, Aguilar-Olmos made a series of phone calls in which he continued to threaten her life and the life of her family, apparently out of jealousy.

“I don’t want you to be playing with a guy because if you are talking to a guy and you think that because I’m in jail, I can’t do anything my queen, you are wrong,” he reportedly said in Spanish. “You know I’m going to get out of here and when I get out of here, if I find out about something, watch out.”

He also vowed to burn down a restaurant, again out of jealousy.

“They want to get me f—ing mad if I find out some s— going on in there,” Aguilar-Olmos said on the call. “I’m going to burn the whole restaurant down, and man, they’re f—ing tweaking on me.
