A 58-year-old South Carolina woman was found dead outside her home early Monday, and police shot and killed her suspect boyfriend while trying to subdue him.
Landrum Police and Spartanburg County deputies responded to the home at about 4 a.m., the Tryon Daily Bulletin reported. They found Shana McClain dead in her wheelchair of apparent stab wounds on the apartment porch.
The suspect, 58-year-old Freddie Edwards, was at the scene holding a large butcher knife in his hand.
Edwards refused deputies’ commands to drop the knife and “fought through” being Tased when he charged at the officers, according to Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright. A K-9 was unable to subdue him as well, Wright said, and when he charged at the officers for a second time, two deputies and a Landrum police officer opened fire.
“It wasn’t just a come straight out of a holster and start shooting. They tried very hard to save this man’s life and he just wouldn’t have none of it,” said Wright.

Police said they had responded to the address on domestic violence calls on several previous occasions, and Edwards’s family said they had a “messy” on-and-off relationship.
The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigations the shooting.
