16-Year-Old Mississippi Teen Juggles Engineering Studies and Marching Band in College

While many teens are busy adjusting to high school hallways, 16-year-old Quinton Simpson is already walking the campus of Hinds Community College in Mississippi. The Clinton native graduated from high school two years early, and now he’s diving headfirst into a college career that blends science, math, and music.

“I do think it’s a big accomplishment because I graduated early,” Quinton told local outlet WAPT 16. “You can’t just go around and say ‘I graduated early’ — that’s not something a lot of people do, and at 16 no less. It feels amazing.”

Behind his success is the steady encouragement of his mom, Tiana Rhodes, who has spent years working in education. She says she’s watched her son push himself to new heights with focus and determination.

“I know living with a teacher has its challenges, but he knows that I value education,” Rhodes explained, adding that she’s been cheering him on every step of the way.

Quinton isn’t just excelling in the classroom. In addition to his focus on electromechanical engineering, this multi-talented young man earned a music scholarship and proudly plays tuba in the college band, showing off not only his academic drive, but his creative side as well.

The recognition of Quinton’s achievement has reached beyond his family and school. SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy, a nonprofit that has supported him in the past, congratulated the young scholar on Instagram.

“Big Congratulations to Quinton Simpson!” the organization wrote. “Quinton is a shining example of the excellence, dedication, and hard work we celebrate at the SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zone. We’re so proud of him and can’t wait to see all he accomplishes next!”

As Quinton kicks off his college journey, he represents more than a personal milestone, he’s a reminder of the power of perseverance, family support, and community pride.
