Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79. The A-list celebrity was a staple in Hollywood for decades, and even dipped her toes into the world of music a year ago, fulfilling a secret, lifelong dream. Diane Keaton fulfilled many of her goals and dreams over the years, but her romantic life has always interested fans, likely because it didn’t follow a traditional trajectory. The beloved movie star was never married, but Diane Keaton had several high-profile romances. In her final years, she made it clear that she was likely to remain single for the rest of her life.

Diane Keaton dated several high-profile men over the years

Diane Keaton’s death at 79 caps an incredibly successful Hollywood career. Keaton wasn’t just beloved by fans, but also by those with whom she worked. Over the years, she even dated a handful of her co-stars, though none of those romances ended in marriage. Keaton actually opened up about her love life in her memoir, Then Again. In the 2011 non-fiction offering, Diane Chornicled her romances with Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Woody Allen.

Fans note that the actor had a type. Keaton seemed to have a thing for brilliant but moody creatives. She admitted to falling in love with Woody Allen fast and furiously. While she insists he was unlike anyone she had ever met, the romance didn’t last too long. Despite that, they remained friends, even during his many controversies and allegations. She said her romance with Beatty, whom she described as charasmatic, was complicated by his stardom and perfectionist nature.

Pacino was the special one. Keaton acknowledged that he was the love of her life, though he never wanted to settle down. In her memoir, Keaton described the push and pull of a romance largely driven by chemistry and passion.

Over the years, she was also rumored to be dating Jack Nicholson, whom she once called “too dangerous to date, but too charming to ignore.” She was also linked to several other stars and admitted to having a single date with Steve Jobs that went nowhere.

In 2023, she happily admitted that she had given up on love and was enjoying living single. She told AARP Magazine that it was “highly unlikely” that she’d date ever again, noting that no one was exactly calling her up looking to take her out.

The ‘Annie Hall’ star and Al Pacino may have carried a torch for each other their entire lives

Despite dating several high-profile men, fans have long suspected that Diane Keaton and Al Pacino saw each other as soulmates, even after they split up. He is her most well-known romance. The two met on the set of The Godfather in the early 1970s. Their on-again, off-again love spanned several years and seemed pretty complicated.

Keaton has described Pacino as the love of her life, but their relationship ultimately ended when he wasn’t ready to settle down. Several months back, a love letter he penned to Keaton surfaced on Reddit, with the famed actor explaining how lonely he felt without her. It is unclear how much of a relationship they maintained in later years, but many suspect they carried a torch for each other for decades. Some fans theorize that Pacino’s reluctance to marry Keaton led her to her unique stance on marriage.

Diane Keaton never married, but she has two children

While Diane Keaton never married, she did become a mother later in life. Motherhood was a job that she considered more important than any other movie she had completed. Still, her road to parenting was a bit complicated. According to Goalcast, Keaton had a wishy-washy stance on becoming a parent. The death of her own parent awakened a maternal drive. After that, she pursued it with vigor. Keaton adopted both of her children as a single parent. Her first child, Dexter, came into her life in 1996. Her son, Duke, was adopted in 2001.

Keaton once called becoming a mother the most humbling experience of her life. In 2013, she revealed that despite being in her 50s when she embarked on the journey of motherhood, she felt like she didn’t have a life until she had her children to share it with. She regularly celebrated their milestones and spoke lovingly of the process of watching her children grow.
