African safaris are Catorina Rowntree’s go-to holiday.
But the Getaway host, 51, last trip resulted in a brush with death after she was chased by a ‘crazy’ charging elephant.
Despite being in the jaws of danger, the television presenter turned back when she lost her sentimental scarf, barely getting out alive.
Getaway host Catorina Rowntree was forced to run for her life as she was chased down by a ‘crazy’ charging elephant during a recent safari in Africa
‘We got that fraction too close… it lunged at us and it started coming for us,’ she said, recalling the incident during an interview on 9Now.
As she ran, Catorina said her beautiful white silk scarf got hooked on a bush and she couldn’t just leave it behind.
‘My best friend gave me that scarf to wear on her wedding when I was the matron of honour,’ she explained.

She continued: ‘As I am running for my life from this elephant, my scarf got hooked onto a bush. It tears away from my neck. And I’m like, “I can’t leave the scarf.” And so I turn to run back for the scarf as everyone is yelling, “Run!”‘
She went on to explain she managed to rescue the garment and get away from danger as her wildlife guide scared the gigantic animal off.
Catorina has hosted the travel show Getaway for more than 25 years and recently reminisced on her very first segment on the documentary series in 1996.

She said rather than venturing overseas to an exotic destination she instead visited Sea World, Movie World and Dreamworld.
‘I always thought [for] my first Getaway story, I’d be cycling through France, maybe I’d be sipping a cocktail somewhere looking elegant and beautiful,’ she told nine.com.au in August, but instead she covered all the theme parks.
‘I was hired because they were looking for a young girl up on the Gold Coast and they were determined to make me ride every single roller coaster,’ she said.
