Jessica Chastain stepped out in full costume following her matinee performance of  Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House in New York on Tuesday.

The actress, 45, who has received praise for wearing a face mask when she attended the Oscars March 12, was styled in a navy blue dress with short sleeves and and A-line skirt.

She wore gray stockings and black ankle boots for the stage performance.

The star’s long red hair was pulled back in a half pony tail and her stage makeup was muted with a strong red lip.

Jessica stars as Nora Helmer in the re-imagined story which focuses on the lives of a group of middle class Norwegians in 1879.

Themes in the production include appearances, the power of money, and the place of women in a patriarchal society.

Nora is a wife and mother who is forced to question everything in her highly structured life.

The play opened March 9, just days before she and Halle Berry presented the Best Actress award at the Oscars.

In an interview with PBS, the Zero Dark Thirty star explained her approach to the character.

‘I tried to dial up the ways Nora was in control of the situation. So even if she’s playing innocent or playing a victim or playing helpless, it is still a choice she’s making,’ Jessica contended.

‘And she is still sort of, in significant ways, the director and stage manager of the proceedings, even if she gets what she wants by playing a sort of traditional woman.’

The story is told without the use of any props, except for chairs, which concerned the actress at first.

‘I was like, “What do you mean?” And it was very difficult for me to even imagine.
