Exciting! A trailer for the highly-anticipated Motherland Christmas special was released on Wednesday giving fans of the show a glimpse of what to expect

In the trailer Julia frets: ‘I’m just not good at Christmas giving!’ as Kevin quips: ‘It’s one of my talents along with changing duvets and cooking rice!’

Julia adds: ‘So what are we going to get mother then Mr Father Christmas? Because last year she said not to get her anything so I didn’t and then she did sad face all day – which is very mixed messaging!’

Kevin then suggests getting her an experience like zorbing to which Liz then questions: ‘What’s zorbing!?’

Kevin then clarifies: ‘It’s when you roll down a hill in a giant see-through ball.’

Liz then hilariously exclaims: ‘She’s an old lady not a gerbil!’

While there is still no word on whether a fourth season will be made, despite pleas from fans, it’s been confirmed that the cast will reunite for a one-off special featuring the return of guest star Joanna Lumley.

After quickly becoming a fan favourite when she appeared in season three, the British icon will be reprising her role as Felicity, Amanda’s impossible to please mother.

The special will see the mums and Kevin busy prepping for the ultimate in blended Christmas celebrations.

It’s a full house at Julia’s with an influx of grandparents demanding endless cups of tea.

Kevin is also joining the family this year after Julia learnt that his alternative was dining on turkey crisps from the hotel vending machine in the company of the other divorced dads.

Liz also turns up when her ex cancels following a massive Christmas Eve bender, letting her down on his first ever offer to host.

Things aren’t looking any better for Amanda (Lucy Punch), who is spending Christmas Day with her ex Johnny (Terry Mynott), the kids and Johnny’s new wife Tamara (Louise Delamere).

Amanda’s mother Felicity has been invited too and jumps at the chance to revel in the awkward atmosphere.

The contrast with Christmas at Anne’s (Philippa Dunne) house couldn’t be starker; Anne is hosting her mammy (Maggie McCarthy) and the cousins – all 29 of them – and is beside herself with excitement.

Despite their enduring love-match, Meg’s (Tanya Moodie) husband Bill buys her a present so dire that it has her questioning whether he really knows her at all.

She gets stuck into the plentiful supply of booze she’s bought for the day but regrets the drunken results when something really shocking happens over the road at Julia’s.

Motherland: Last Christmas airs on Friday, 23 December at 9:30PM on BBC One and iPlayer.
