Olivia Munn Shares Unique Proposal Story with John Mulaney on ‘Today With Jenna & Friends’: The Unexpected Sign That Made It Memorable

In a candid conversation with Jenna Bush Hager on the Today show, Olivia Munn shared an amusing anecdote about her husband, comedian John Mulaney, and his initial proposal plans. Mulaney’s approach might have been well-intentioned, but it was far from what Munn had envisioned for such a significant moment.

During Wednesday’s episode on November 19, Munn revealed how Mulaney decided to consult her best friend via text, asking, “Hey, can you ask Olivia what she would want for a proposal?” Munn was clear in her response: she preferred something intimate, without the presence of her family or any grand gestures. “I just don’t want my family there. I don’t need anybody there. I don’t want a big display,” she explained to Bush Hager. To her surprise, Mulaney’s initial idea was to include her family, which was precisely the opposite of her wishes.

Despite the initial misstep, Mulaney ultimately found a way to propose that aligned perfectly with Munn’s preferences. The couple was enjoying a low-key “staycation” at the Bel-Air Hotel when Mulaney decided to pop the question.

“He did it on the balcony,” Munn recounted, adding a humorous note about the venue: “If you’ve been at the Bel-Air Hotel, it’s not been updated. It sounds fancy because it says Bel-Air, but it’s not been updated.”

Munn’s story offers a light-hearted reminder of the importance of communication and understanding in relationships, especially when it comes to life’s big moments.

Munn then explained that they were upgraded to a “nice suite” with a questionable hot tub that was surrounded by signs.

“And one of them says ‘no diarrhea.’ So in my engagement photos, I’m like this,” she said, as she mimicked herself holding up her ring finger.

“With a ‘no diarrhea’ sign behind you?!” Bush Hager asked. “No it does not!” she said. But she admitted the moment sounded “so romantic, minus that.”

“He didn’t know! He was excited!” Munn said of her now-husband.

Mulaney and Munn have been married since 2024. The pair share two children.

Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
