Uptown New Yorker and blogger Yaminah Mayo (@spicy.mayo) fills her closet with colorful and classic pieces, including her staple three-piece pink suit. In this episode of ITK: Coveted Closet, Yaminah walks us through her flashy, timeless sense of style.
Living in the Bronx, Yaminah finds that she can dress more flamboyantly than in other areas of New York.
“Sometimes, I’m not in the mood to talk,” Yaminah says. “I’m a Cancer, so I’m very emotional. I use my clothing to do my talking for me because sometimes it can say what I just can’t say.
Yaminah describes her style as playful, colorful and comfortable. Her favorite pieces evoke memories of times she’s worn them, like a one-shoulder jumpsuit she wore to fashion week or a Leret Leret cashmere sweater that reminds her of a night of laughter, good wine and delicious food. Other highlights include a Christopher Esber dress with lines of buttons that let you adjust the silhouette, a pair of Fussbett mules by Marni and a pair of adidas x Gucci loafers.
Care to channel Yaminah’s eye-catching sense of style? These are her five tips to dressing playfully yet comfortably.
1. Play with patterns, prints and colors
“I definitely let my personality shine through when I’m getting dressed via color and prints,” Yaminah says. “I try to have fun with my wardrobe but in a more sophisticated way. I don’t want to look like a second-grade art teacher.”
2. Stick to classic silhouettes
Choosing silhouettes like A-line skirts or straight-leg jeans pare back brighter prints and patterns for a more timeless, versatile look.
3. Invest in conversation starters
A good bag or a crazy shoe is great for starting conversation. Plus, they’re worth the investment since you can wear them over and over in different outfits.
4. Loafers are a must
Yaminah says everyone should have a pair of loafers because they dress up any outfit.
5. Look through every piece in your wardrobe
“I’m an emotional shopper, so I buy what makes me happy,” Yaminah says. She enjoys looking through all of the pieces in her wardrobe because they remind her of good times when she first found them or when she’s worn them.
