Just two days after HBO renewed The Last of Us for a second season, the beloved video game adaptation continues its first season with the third episode.

The new episode – entitled Long Long Time – introduces two new characters, Bill, played by Nick Offerman, and Frank, played by Murray Bartlett.

The episode also continues the journey West by Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), following a touching sacrifice in last week’s episode.

The episode begins with Joel reaching his hand into a stream and stacking a number of rocks on top of each other, with a title card revealing he’s 10 miles west of Boston.

He walks back to the campsite with Ellie leaning up against a tree, asking him if he wants his jacket back but he says no.

He tosses Ellie some food as she says she’s never been in the woods before and there were ‘more bugs than I thought.’

‘I’ve been thinking about what happened. You needed a truck battery and you made a choice so don’t blame me for something that’s not my fault,’ Ellie says, seemingly referring to the death of Tess (Anna Torv).

He tells her it’s a five-hour hike and Ellie says, ‘We can manage that’ as they take off through the woods.

Ellie asks if she can get a gun but he cuts her off and says no immediately, as they head into a building where he stashed some supplies.

Ellie gets very excited to see an old Mortal Kombat II arcade machine, as she starts professing her love for the game and its characters.

Ellie starts to explore despite Joel saying the place has already been picked over pretty well.

She opens a metal door in the floor and drops down into the space with her flashlight, grabbing a trash can she get use to get out.

She starts looking around when she hears a snarl… and sees someone who has turned, trapped underneath a pile of bricks but somehow still alive.

Ellie takes out her switchblade and starts cutting into its forehead as spores come out of his flesh before killing it with her knife.

Back in the main room Joel calls for Ellie but she doesn’t respond, and when he goes to look for her she comes back with a box of tampons.

She asks again to get a gun and he denies her as they hit the road once again, as they see a crashed airplane.

She asks if he’s ever flown in an airplane before and he says he did but it wasn’t great but she marvels at it saying, ‘Dude you’ve been in the sky.

She asks how everything started and he says, ‘No one knows for sure, but, best guess… Cordyceps mutated.’

‘And some of it got into the food supply. Probably a basic ingredient like flour or sugar. There were certain brands of food that were sold everywhere, all across the country, across the world. Bread, cereal… Pancake mix.

‘You eat enough of it, it’ll get you infected. So the tainted food all hits the store shelves around the same time, Thursday. People bought it, ate some Thursday night or Friday morning. Day goes on… They started to get sick. Afternoon, evening, they got worse. Then they started bitin’. Friday night, September 26, 2003. And by Monday, everything was gone,’ he said.

He tells her they should go a different way because there is something there he doesn’t want her to see, and, of course, she says now she has to see it.

She walks into a field filled with corpses, as he explained, ‘About a week after Outbreak Day, soldiers… Went through the countryside, evacuated the small towns. Told you you were Goin’ to a qz, and you were… If there was room. If there wasn’t…’

She mentions that these people probably weren’t sick and he says, ‘probably not’ and she asks, ‘Why kill them? Why not just leave ’em be?

‘Dead people can’t be infected,’ he explains, as they flash back to September 30, 2003, where the army is evacuating people and we first meet Bill.

While the soldiers are checking houses, he’s hidden in a secret area of his house, as they mark his door with a red X.

‘Not today you new world order jackboots,’ Bill says to himself.

Bill gets in his truck with his boat attached as he loads up on gas, including a number of gas barells.

He loads up on supplies at a store before the power is cut out, and he grabs a case of wine as well before setting up his generator.

Bill starts cutting down trees, setting up traps in his property while growing foot in his garden and feeding his chickens.

He makes himself a steak dinner and saves the grease he cocked with, when an alarm goes off.

He turns on the security monitors when he sees an infected man walk towards his property… as he hits a tripwire that activates a shotgun and kills him.

‘Never gets old,’ Bill says to himself, as they cut to five years later in 2007, when he’s working in a workshop when another alarm goes off.

He goes out and finds Frank (Murray Bartlett) in the hole, who says he’s trying to get to Boston and he’s the last of a party of 10.

Bill drops down a ladder for Frank to climb out and tells Frank to stop at the top, using a device to test if he’s infected, but he’s not.

Bill tells him where Boston is but Frank says he’s hungry and he hasn’t eaten in two days.

Bill says if he feeds him everyone will come expecting a free lunch adding, ‘this is not an Arby’s.’

Frank retorts, ‘Arby’s didn’t give out free lunch, they were a restaurant. I won’t talk about it to any bums, or hobos or vagabonds, I promise. I mean, you already know I’m bad at lying.’

Bill ultimately lets him in his home and gives him clothes while he showers before Bill feeds him as Frank raves about the food.

‘Everything tastes amazing when you’re starving,’ Bill says as he pours Frank some wine.

‘A man who knows to pair rabbit with a Beaujolais,’ Frank says, as Bill adds, ‘I know I don’t seem like the type,’ but Frank adds, ‘Oh you do.’

Frank finishes eating and says, ‘I think I’ll be going now, but first…’ as he walks to the antique piano.

He digs in the seat for sheet music and finds something he thinks Bill might like, but he’s having trouble playing and singing as Bill stops him.

Frank says he’s going to leave again, as Bill sits down and plays a tune himself, Linda Ronstadt’s Long Long Time.

‘So… who’s the girl? The girl you were singing about?’ Frank asks, but Bill says, ‘There is no girl.’

Frank says, ‘I know,’ and leans down and kisses Bill, asking what his name is and telling him to go take a shower, as Bill goes upstairs.

Frank is waiting naked in bed when Bill gets out of the shower, as Frank takes Bill’s towel off and Bill gets in bed with Frank.

‘Have you ever done this before?’ Frank asks and Bill says, ‘A long time ago, with a girl.’

‘I’m gonna start with simple things but I want you to know I’m not a whore. I don’t have sex for lunches, even great ones. So if I do this, I’m gonna stay for a few more days. Is that OK?’ Frank asks and Bill agrees.

Joel was tasked with taking Ellie to a safe house in the first episode, along with his companion Tess (Anna Torv), though no one was waiting like they were promised.

They ultimately traversed through the quarantined zone of Boston in the second episode, though it was revealed that Tess had gotten bit along the way and is infected.

She decided to sacrifice herself, setting the museum ablaze, giving Joel and Ellie enough time to get out alive.

The trailer for Sunday’s third episode introduces Frank, who has quite the security system set up… including a trap that he caught Frank with.

It seems Frank has known Joel for some time, as they’re seen talking on his property with Joel telling Frank he’ll eventually have ‘raiders’ trying to steal from him.

The trailer also shows Ellie trying to learn more about the fungus, taking her switchblade knife to an infected human.
